View Full Version : Trae has started pissing people off with his foul drawing. But can you blame him?

What did he come up seeing? In the mid 2000s you had Wade with the patented pump fake:
https://thumbs.gfycat.com/GrimyLegitimateGypsymoth-size_restricted.gif
Fans hated it. You should have seen how Eliteballer hated on Wade 06-10. Talking about him just being Latrell Sprewell with ref assistance. Coaches fined guards who bought his pumps.....but just about everyone but Kirk Hinrich kept doing it and getting jumped into.
Then we had KD who patented the dreaded rip through:
https://thumbs.gfycat.com/IcyHairyFantail-size_restricted.gif
Then it evolved in the form of James Harden who not only took the pump fake and jump into you....AND the rip through to new levels....he also created new moves like the arm hook:

and dastardly “Mount”

Steve Nash was caught on tape saying "Thats not basketball" to a ref about the one above vs the Nets. And Nash is a fan of Trae last I heard.
To his and his teams credit they arent pretending its anything but what it is....a way to draw fouls. And they dont even act like he isnt selling it in the process:
“That’s when I started really focusing on just knowing what I’m allowed to do as an offensive player and what the defense is allowed to do, and so I just use, sometimes I just use their size and their strength against them,”
In Young, who is in his third year in the NBA, the Atlanta Hawks already had one of the most skilled players in the league at drawing fouls. The 6-foot-1, 180 pound guard has an uncanny knack for gauging a defender’s approach and finding a way to draw contact, whether he’s driving in the lane or getting a shot up from the perimeter. He trains specifically on his balance and his ability to stop-and-start, so he can use it to his advantage in games.
“That obviously is going to help us a lot, getting guys in foul trouble on other teams and just getting to the line and getting easy points is always a good thing,” Young said. “The more we can do it, the better, and we’ve been doing a really good job so far, and hopefully we can keep it going.”
His coach is trying to teach the rest of the team too:
“We want to live in the paint, we want to create opportunities in the paint. But we also have guys who know how to get us into the bonus and if we can get in the bonus and if we have guys that can get to the free-throw line, that’s a great combination.
“There’s a strategy involved in that. We have to identify how we get to the bonus early, ways that we can play downhill and not settle, and then we have a couple guys that have the tricks and know how to do it. We’re still trying to get some other guys to learn some of that, as well.”
HEs doing it off film study and flopping and not really hiding it:
“Trae’s a master at getting calls, just flat-out,” Collins added. “He understands how to get guys off-balance, he understands how to get guys’ momentum to work in his favor, he understands how to sell a call, the whole nine.”
As much as Young watches film to prepare for how a defense will guard him, it also just comes with the flow of the game, he said, picking up reads and adjusting after the first few minutes.
For Young, it goes back to a simple concept. Knowing the rules, and knowing what defenders are and aren’t allowed to do. “I know when I set a screen, a big man can’t just run through me, that’s just the rule,” Young said. “I know the rules and that’s, for me, I take pride in that.”
I get it I guess. Youre 6'2'' 185 pounds you cant win with physicality. Hes taking 16 free throws a game so far and making 90+ percent of them. Hes not gonna stop. Other guards will add it too. Soon...you wont be able to go over a screen and chase a guy. They will just stop on a dime and make you bump them as they go up for the 3. I cant even imagine all the ho ass tools guards of 10 years from now will have with all these guys to learn from.

Luka does the same thing, just not yet to that degree. To be fair, the game has reached parody levels with amount of soft Swiss cheese defense in the paint we see today. Luka will slowly ballerina-ball (new pun invented to describe the new style of crab dribble players can now employ to get anywhere on the court due to the freedom-of-movement rules) into paint without so much as a finger touching him, but when it is time to shoot in order to draw a foul he will suddenly start pinballing off anybody close. Clown show on the court these days. All they need is some circus music, a little car, some big floppy hats and shoes, etc.

Indeed I think why fans have stopped watching the Nba nowadays is because the Nba has completely shifted the Rules to only favour offence instead of defence and it's just not that fun to watch games that always end up with scores such as 130 to 128 as it just feels cheap nowadays to be truthfully honest with you.
And now with this inflated stat era, nobody cares anymore if players get triple-doubles or score 40 points as we all know as fans that in prior eras some of these players wouldn't be posting their insane stat lines night in night out a case in point is Trae Young nowdays.

I disagree. To be in the NBA now you have to be skilled. When you look at those Knicks/Pacers kind of teams during the 90's you wonder if they ever would have made it today. It was so much strength and little skills from some of those forwards. And then you continue to the Shaq era where every team had 3 big white men who could not play but had 6 fouls each. Today the big men need some skill and that makes it more fun to watch. The reason why the viewership is going down is not because of more points per game. There are so many factors that affect the rating it just shows that you have no idea why the ratings are down when you blame points per game.

The only "unskilled" people among the pacers major players were the Davis boys and they would easily be in the NBA today. The league still has rebounders who dont shoot....especially ones who set amazing screens. Mark Jackson, Mckey, and Reggie would all thrive today to different degrees. The Knicks too for the most part. Anthony Mason would be a point forward. Oakley developed 3 point range and was a great passer....especially lobs and outlets.
Those entire teams would find a place.
Also....
I agree ratings have a dozen factors. Mostly having more options today and streaming....
That said? Ive personally witnessed people my age scoff at a modern game after some wild three and change the channel. Several times ive heard "Thats not basketball!" said word for word in person from multiple people. Right or wrong....ive heard it and seen games turned off.

This is true, nearly all the side step moves you see today would be considered traveling back in the day. The Euro steps on the half d dribble would be considered traveling, most modern crossovers would be considered carrying.
The game has evolved for better or worse, it is what it is.

Trae is an unbelievably skilled and intelligent player. He should continue to draw fouls. If he can do that effectively, why stop?
He is already better than prime Steve Nash.

Definitely. Players are supposed to do whatever it takes. Even the refs are helpeless. The league needs to find a way to make the rules less open to interpretation and then enforce it.

Saying that the modern NBA "isn't basketball" just because you dislike three pointers is a pretty stupid way of thinking.
I personally disliked the NBA of the 90s/early 2000s. Post ups bore me to death and so many games were boring, low scoring slugfests. The modern NBA (more three point shooting/less post ups) is way more aesthetically pleasing to me.
In the last 10 years I have watched more games than I did during the first 30 years of my life.

Please, Curry and Kyrie never played in the golden age of basketball. They took out hand checking, changed all the rules to allow more scoring and a more entertaining game, this is the result. Half the plays today would be considered traveling and walking and carrying. All these players Hollywood, it's the evolution of the game, Trae is one of the most skilled players in the league today bar none, why should he make it easy for the defender to guard him?

False. Curry got his 30 with only 5 free throw attempts per game. So he didn't play for the whistle at all. Also has no claim for ever being a traveler or rule bender so that made no sense to throw in there. Trae is getting triple kyrie and steph by playing like a bitch.

Curry is bad at drawing fouls (and he also doesn't drive to the basket as much).

I said multiple RULE CHANGES, you conveniently IGNORE the rules Steph and Kyrie took advantage of and make a big deal about the ability to draw fouls. I repeat, they benefited from step backs, no hand checking and carrying the ball. Defense and physicality has been removed from the game long before Trae and Harden. Do you know Trae young gets double teamed more than Kyrie or Steph? Hmmmm I wonder why if all he can do is draw fouls?

Kyrie is a better driver than both of them, but he genuinely doesn't play for the whistle, but the bucket. As basketball should be... a foul is when a defender violently interrupts your normal taken shot, not when an offensive player decides to throw himself at you in awkward ways and then flop like you hit him. That's weak ass way to play lmao. That's flopping and is a blatant disrespect of the game. You seen what happens these types in the playoffs when refs swallow the whistle more on blatant flops.
HBK_Kliq_2
01-01-2021, 04:12 PM
Well the refs at least make it more difficult in the playoffs to get to the free throw line. We see Harden's free throw rate drop in the playoffs every year.
The 2000s era saw Dwyane Wade get to the free throw line 16 times a game in the 2006 finals.
Game 6 in 2006 finals, Wade had more freethrows (21) then field goals attempted (18).
Game 5 in 2006 finals, Wade had 25 freethrows.
So its not just this era. Refs were officiating for Wade in 2006 finals like it was a mid season regular season game.

Trae is catching the defenders out of position after curling off the screen. The defender is out of control and Trae keeps them honest by putting on the brakes and drawing contact. It's not his responsibility to prevent the defender from running into him, it maybe a cheap foul but if the defender is dumb enough to do then you exploit it.
I like Kyrie and Steph games, they are all excellent players but I see no need to put down Trae to pump these players up.

The thing that pissed me off about Wade the most is when he would jump into a defender to draw a foul. It wasn't the pump fake. That's been in the NBA forever. If you can get a defender to foul you on that, fine. But when the offensive player initiates contact on a defender playing good defense and they get rewarded for it, that's BS and not real basketball.
