My opinion? Superbad was the better film. More subtle, realistic. But American Pie was bigger, more culturally relevant.

Both are great. I remember watching American Pie for the first time when it came on pay per view as a kid, that scene where the character invites that foreign female student to his house, had a camera set up in his room for his friends to watch her get naked etc.. , that whole scene had me dying in laughter, probably saw that movie like 10 times in one month.
Superbad is also great, I think it has aged much better than comedies like 40 year old virgin & Wedding Crashers.
Off topic, but Old School to me is probably the most underrated comedy in the last 20 years, one of the few comedies I enjoyed that had Will Ferrell in it.

No contest. Superbad kept you entertained throughout the whole movie. American Pie was mostly dumb with a few laughs in between. Plus the only likeable characters in American Pie was Stifler and the lead character's, I don't remember his name because he's so forgettable, dad.

Superbad because they actually looked and acted like teenagers.
The part where they were in the lab and Cera's lab partner was acting like a cat :lol
I grew up with American Pie being hilarious so I’m bias. Both great movies and we shouldn’t have to choose between the two.

Damn -- fairly even result.
I honestly can't pick between the two. Superbad IS probably a "better" movie, but American Pie is iconic. It embodies -- culturally speaking -- an era of time. The first modern "raunchy" R-rated teen movie, of which a myriad of clones copied (https://www.theatlantic.com/entertainment/archive/2012/04/was-american-pie-more-influential-than-titanic/255391/).
American Pie, meanwhile, came at the beginning of an era. That's not to say it was the first mass-market R-rated raunchy sex comedy. Animal House predates it by over 20 years, and the '80s were littered with films in the same vein, from Porky's to Revenge of the Nerds. But that genre was often marginal at best, and was mostly in a lull throughout the '90s until There's Something About Mary in 1998 and American Pie in 1999. Those films heralded a resurgence in low-to-medium budget comedies that have pushed the boundaries of taste and the MPAA's delicate sensibilities ever since.
The surest genre bet for budget-to-return has long been in horror flicks, but in the past decade, R-rated comedies have established themselves as solid business propositions as well. American Pie was in the vanguard of a movement that has brought us such success stories as the Hangover movies, Superbad, Old School, and practically the entirety of Judd Apatow's film career.
I mean, just listening to some of the songs in the film takes you back to that period of time.

I mean -- that's the argument for American Pie. Culturally significant. Iconic. Memorable.

Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story is crazy underrated too.

American Pie is better. The first half of Superbad is great when they're trying to get a hold of booze but goes downhill in the second half when those 2 numbnuts cops are introduced.

Superbad is the better made and more consistently funny movie, but I liked American Pie better. I definitely enjoyed both though, two very good comedies
But since we're on the subject I have to get this off my chest, I always found McLovin to be extremely overrated. He's supposed to be the iconic character of the movie, but I found him to be mildly funny at best

That guy that hit them with the car was funny as hell.

Superbad's commentary is a must-watch. My favorite DVD commentary ever.
Judd Apatow brings his 9 year old daughter and Jonah won't stop swearing so he gets pissed off and leaves. The commentary is an absolute riot, highly recommended.

I liked Superbad a lot but I grew up with me and my buddies watching American Pie. I know the rest of them weren't that good but the 1st was def part of an era.

I disagree bro. I actually thought the sequel was good. Not as good as the original obv, but a really solid follow up. The vast majority of sequels, specifically comedy ones suck so that's a rarity. And I liked Reunion too, far from a masterpiece but I thought it was solid. Wedding however was definitely a misfire, it's by far the weakest one and it's legitimately just Stifler acting like a retard the entire time :lol

I have trouble comparing these movies because American Pie feels like a cultural institution, thanks to all the sequels.
