I see a lot of threads everywhere. So here we go
1. Why are the Mavs 8-12?
- The Mavericks have so far had the hardest schedule in the NBA (https://www.teamrankings.com/nba/ranking/schedule-strength-by-other)
- Luka came in out of shape and struggled the 4 first games
- Josh Richardson (31mpg), Dorian Finney-Smith(28mpg), and Maxi Kleber (24mpg) have lost 9+ games each, being isolated in hotel rooms because of covid protocols. They are the 3 best defenders on the Mavs and two of them start.
- Kristaps Porziņģis has been out because of an injury and does not play back-to-back games
- All of this has resulted in the team not getting the chemistry they had last year
2. Should Cuban fire Don Nelson jr.?
Don Nelson JR was able to get Tim Hardaway jr. KP and Burke for Dennis Smith JR. and a couple of average picks at best. Dennis Smith JR. asked yesterday to be sent to the d-league because of little playing time. He has played 3 games this season. While the former Knicks players are scoring 45ppg for the Mavs. In my opinion that is a lopsided trade. He also went hard after Luka Doncic while Divac skipped on him, even knowing his father and what talent Luka had. The Phonix Suns also skipped on Luka, despite that their coach, Igor Kokoskov, was also the coach for Luka on the national team.
3. Should they fire Rick Carlisle?
No, no, no. He did a great job with the Pacers and it clearly showed after the brawl. He was great with the Pistons. He did some top-level coaching during the finals when he suddenly started to use zone-defense at random times and JJ Barea became a starter. Nobody saw it coming. Last season he coached the Mavericks to have the best offensive rating ever. The same team more or less like last season had the best offensive rating of all time. This season they are dead last in 3 point shooting. That tells you there something else going on other than the coach. Please check question 1 again.
4. Will the Mavs make the playoffs?
Yes. They only need to beat 4 teams in the west to get play in the play-ins for the playoffs. By that time this team will be clicking.
5. Should they have kept Seth Curry?
Time will tell, but Seth Curry got traded because he could not defend anyone. Hopefully, we will see the effect when the season progresses and Josh Richardson get familiar with the team.

The Mavs are an average to below average team. 8th or 7th Seed In the West.
The media overhyped Luka for ratings just like Zion instead of just letting his career unfold naturally.
Luka the Preseason Vegas Odds MVP!
I never heard the media promoting preseason Vegas odds for MVP as an accomplishment before this season.

The Mavs better make the playoffs this year and dont fall into lottery. They dont have their own pick, it belongs to the Knicks.

Agreed.
Rick is a great coach and you'd trade KP before getting rid of him.
Nellie Jr. and Mark nailed Luka and then made the KP trade...although the KP trade might not look better than a lateral move if he can't stay healthy or improve because we locked up a lot of money and limited flexibility with how you can build around Luka. There was always real risk to that trade...not in terms of what you were giving up (although the draft picks could bite you), but because of what you were doing to flexibility.
I'd also just remind everyone that while I like Mark/Nellie Jr....they really failed to surround Dirk with anything noteworthy as a supporting cast after Nash left for the remainder of his career. It is hard, no doubt, but hopefully they've learned from their mistakes. If the goal is to really win titles...they have to do better than what they did for Dirk...or you won't win unless you get a historic performance.
I do like the moves they've made, but still not a title level team.

Yes, but it is incredibly hard to create a good team when you never have assets with value to trade. Out of 20 seasons with Cuban, 3 of them have been losing seasons. That means the Mavs never had high picks. It took them 3 years to do what some teams use 10 years to accomplish as far as rebuilding. They have set themself up for this summer where they 23 million in cap space and if Josh Richardson does not use his player option, they 33 million that can be used in a sign and trade. We know how good Don Nelson JR. is with the creatives when it comes to trades.

Well, they let Nash go and some other players that would have been assets...and, of course, part of the problem has been their inability to land free agents.
I agree it is really hard to win titles, but if that is the standard...the Mavs front office has been behind those title winning franchises over the years...and have been largely propped up by two great players in Dirk and Luka, certainly Dirk, that make the teams look better than they really are.

Keep it up Mavs, Knicks got your pick. Everyone laughed at the Knicks and nonstop trolling giving up KP for DSJ (lol he sucks, he's a G-Leaguer and I am OK with that) but is Porzingis ever gonna be healthy? I got over it last year when the Knicks beat them twice, and I wanna see KP do well. But for this year and maybe in 2 years I will be fine with the Mavs underachieving... for Knicks purposes ya know? :lol they did well with the Clips pick, got IQ who looks like a good part of the future.
Inb4 the Mavs go on a tear and get into the playoffs as the 4th seed :lol

Dallas have fallen off a cliff offensively without Curry

He's headed to the Gleague! :lol
Remember those days when they were hyping luka > baldan bc he led the mavs to two wins against the clippers during the wcfr? Seems it didn't age that well, after all.

It was a trade the Mavs absolutely always make because the upside is huge, but there were also always real downsides giving up picks for a player that can't stay healthy and is about to get a big contract.

Yea, that was a mistake, but the goal was to create a defensive team. Nobody could have seen Nash suddenly becoming an MVP, especially after being destroyed in the playoffs with the Mavs where they lost in the first round and Nash shot 38%. I also believe that Nash was more or less the same player, but the new system worked perfectly for him. Just look at Chris Duhon first season with Mike D'Antoni.

I ain't convinced of these answers.
The Dallas Mavericks fall to 9-14, No. 13 Seed in the Western Conference.
Stephen Silas left, and Carlisle is exposed. Carlisle has to go imo.

Just to be clear, you are arguing that the Mavs should fire Carlisle...a legend in Dallas both on and off the court (for good reasons)...a few games into a weird season in which they got new players and haven't had a lot of court time together...and don't have anything approaching an elite roster.
Just want to make sure that is what you are saying.

The Mavericks finished 7th in the Western Conference last year. The Warriors with Curry in the lineup are once again a factor. Doncic is great but Curry is the best player in the world. It doesn't make sense to me to have the Mavericks ahead of the Warriors. Chris Paul switched from the Thunder to the Suns.
Mavericks fans will need to explain to themselves why they're behind the Grizzlies, Trail Blazers, Rockets, Spurs, and Thunder. Strength of schedule and missed games due to covid seems sufficient to explain the current record.

Luka has at least 30 triple-doubles already whereas curry doesn't even have 10 yet atm
Also luka has made the playoffs at age 21 while curry couldn't until he reached 25 y.o.
And don't forget luka has had an iconic moment in the playoffs too so go figure ;)
