View Full Version : The toughest defense is the kind Giannis faces in playoff, aka "1-man team" coverage

Giannis has yet to overcome it due to a beginner jumpshot
Lebron overcame it various years, but he also never faced it certain years by virtue of having an equal-scoring teammate that attracted equal defensive attention (11', 16', 20').
Infact, everyone in history needed a 1b (equal-scoring teammate) to win half their rings, thereby accumulating stats against easier coverage for those rings.
The only exception is Jordan, who won every ring with a true 2nd option that averaged far less - so only Jordan faced 1-man team coverage for his entire career, as Kenny Smith states here (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=4UF6Xx3F2Lo&t=01m54s).
Clearly, rings with a 1b < rings with 2nd options, and Jordan has 4 more rings with 2nd options than anyone else in history.. Also, the "1-man team" coverage that he faced gives ultimate integrity to his #1 ranked production rate (PER, WS/48, BPM and VORP).

No one cares about the averages. No Pippen, no championship. It's that simple. He did stuff "you don't see on stat sheets".

You guys always say that Pippen's weak ppg and efficiency "isn't everything" and there's other categories to look at when comparing players
But you're missing the point of why Pippen's weak PPG matters
Pippen's weak PPG matters because it makes Jordan's stats more impressive, due to facing 1-man team coverage for his entire career, while lebron had teammates to match his scoring and therefore attract equal defensive attention (lebron had "1b" teammates).
Clearly, rings with a 1b < rings with 2nd options, and Jordan has 4 more rings with 2nd options than anyone else in history.
The "1-man team" coverage that he faced gives ultimate integrity to his #1 ranked production rate (PER, WS/48, BPM and VORP)... Stats against 1-man team coverage > rings with 1b's (equal scoring teammates).

No matter what you are trying to explain. You remove Pippen from those Bulls teams and there is absolutely no way Jordan ends up with 6 rings and 2 3-peats.

You're looking at it backwards
Everyone in history that won 3 rings needed a sidekick to win FMVP or average 25 ppg for at least 1 of the Finals
Unfortunately, Pippen is 0/6 in FMVP and peaked at 21 ppg in the Finals (19.0 on 42% career).. So that proves only mj could win 3 with Pippen

Even without phil jackson too apparently
Phil inherited a team already on the cusp of the Finals, and they would've made the 89' Finals if Pippen hadn't missed game 5 and 6 of the ECF (10 on 40% series average)
Ultimately, the triangle could win 55 games if run to perfection, but only MJ or his clone (Kobe) could win rings with it.
MJ invented the footwork needed to average 30 in the triangle, so it shouldn't be a surprise that he's the only one that won with the offense
Furthermore, the triangle couldn't get Kerr an open look every possession and needed frequent bailouts throughout the game - so the offense never won anything in 50 years until it met the goat bailout artists (MJ/Kobe), then it won 11 rings in 18 years.. goat bailout artists were the key that unlocked the triangle's greatness.
Ultimately, Phil was a 1st time, nobody coach when he won in 90/91, while MJ was the goat candidate and inventing new footwork that would elevate the triangle from obscurity to goat accomplishment
Carry on

Again, kobe actually had steve kerr playing for the lakers back then? I didn't know about that but that's pretty interesting to say the least. ;)

MJ quit on the Bulls before game 5 even started. 8FGA for the entire game, only down by 1pt going into the 4th quarter. It was the biggest game in his career, the biggest in Bulls franchise and he flat out quit.

That is such an incredibly weak argument.
The best 1-man team coverage that exists is zone and Jordan never faced it. Not even once. He even actively campaigned against it.
LeBron faces zone all the time.

Jordan could never.

Ganging up on LeBron is what the league has been doing for 18 years.

Kawhi had the best 1 man team carry job, he took the trashcan brothers (lowry\siakam) all the way to the top and he had a 44% usage in closeout games during 2nd\3rd rounds.
Then he had the GOAT team in 2014 that destroyed the 2 time champions heat.
Now he is apart of the greatest duo in NBA history for a single season (kawhi and george are first star teammates ever to shoot 50\40\90)
Kawhi is god.

Kukoc led Pippen in BPM in the 1994 Playoffs
And Pippen had a 2.0 BPM in the 93' Playoffs - show me a sidekick that won with lower BPM (very few, if any)

It forced the Warriors to gameplan for Siakam for the rest of the series, which made Kawhi's stats easier
Otoh, no one ever gameplanned for Pippen.. ever.. teams can't gameplan for flow points and don't need to
