It should have been Shaquille O'Neal he averaged 28.3 ppg and 11 rpg while Payton averaged 19.6 ppg. Shaq only played 60 games.

The Sonics were the no. 2 seed after the Jazz though so the voters favored Payton.

GP was getting MVP buzz all year that season.

Lead his team to 61 wins after people expected them to lose a step after the team traded Kemp for Baker. Payton was really that good honestly and I dont remember hearing anybody complaining about 3rd place votes back then lol.
