“I have been asked that but I don’t know the answer to that,” Rivers said during an interview. “I mean Michael Jordan would be the logo.”

Except the logo isn't Jerry West. At least not officially or legally. The NBA claims that it's an based on an amalgam of players and thus it doesn't have to pay any royalties to West. If it introduced a new logo based on Jordan, how much would MJ charge them? Ten cents per appearance? Think how many times the NBA logo shows up on broadcasts and on the internet and on merch. Same thing if you're using another other players likeness. They'll want their money, or their heirs will. The current NBA logo is iconic, and conveniently royalty free. They're not going to change it anytime soon.
