I do. Penny, Jordan, Grant Hill, Olajuwon, Ewing, Barkley, younger Shaq, Kemp, Reggie Miller are just a few names.

That said, it's not about ranking eras and all but what is dislike all about? If you like basketball as a sport, it's hard to hate on the 90s as an era. Modern game progresses and we still enjoy elements of the past in what we do today. So again, I don't see the reason for the strong non-appreciation for the past.

The 90s gets a bad name mainly because of 1997-99. But anyone who watched the league between 1990-96 watched an incredible league that had the right balance between offense and defense.

The league wasn't stiff and slow in 1993 or 1994 as it was in 1998 or 1999. Anyone who watched the entire decade saw that. Just look at the year by year pace:

1990: 98.3
1991: 97.8
1992: 96.6
1993: 96.8
1994: 95.1
1995: 92.9
1996: 91.8
1997: 90.1
1998: 90.3
1999: 88.9

The league's pace in the early 90s was actually faster than it was between 2010-15. You had a good mixture of everything, minus the three point shooting. So I'm not sure why it gets the bad name.

I mean, did people watch the game after MJ retired, between 1999-04? It was even slower than during his time (1984-98).

The 90s NBA was a snooze fest.

What you say doesn't make sense. The pace is incredibly high and the PPG is even higher. This indicates no actual balance between offense and defense.

Since 1971 (back when the league was an up and down fest), this is the highest PPG. Literally - in the last 50 years, you haven't seen the league scoring more.

The perimeter defense is also abysmal. The league's three point percentage is 37%, the highest of all-time.

You can't have the most extreme offensive numbers and also have the greatest defense ever. That makes absolutely no sense.

Correct. This is why their views always have glaring contradictions. "The 90s was slow and dull." Well, yea, if we're acting like the late 90s was all that existed as far as the decade was concerned.

Did these guys watch basketball from 1999-2014? How is it tremendously different to the 90s as a whole? It literally makes no sense. The game, not too long ago, wasn't that much different to the way it was played in the 90s. Anyone who thinks otherwise clearly wasn't watching the league then.

Game was too slow. Guys had talent but offense is so much better now. I can’t standing seeing guys posting up so much and rely on size. Big men have skill today. I’m not trashing the players but the games just aren’t entertaining. Way to much in the paint. I honestly can’t imagine preferring old school nba over now. Back in the day, you only had a few players scoring 40 + on a given night. Now, there are plenty of guys hitting 50 just about every week!

I’m not trashing the players but the games just aren’t entertaining. Way to much in the paint. I honestly can’t imagine preferring old school nba over now. Back in the day, you only had a few players scoring 40 + on a given night. Now, there are plenty of guys hitting 50 just about every week!

So I guess kevin mchale is not fun to watch operate in the post? Lol, do you even play ball? Also, since you are all about offense where anyone with a hot shooting night can score 40-50, you are exactly the demographic the nba has been catering to. People see points, people are happy.

During the “Last Dance” thing, I watched some 80’s & 90’s ball. Again I’ve got respect for the players but it’s like watching dinosaurs. Magic was a point guard and had no handles! Big men like Malone & Ewing couldn’t shoot the three! That mean everything was congested inside the arc. Ugly!! How many 90’s starters could start today? How many couldn’t even get minutes? Oakley? Mutumbo?

The game is beautiful right now. Plenty of space to operate and some of the most entertaining players ever. I’d take Bron, Curry, Harden, KD, Embid, & Mitchell over Shaq, Robinson, Drexler, Wilkins, Kemp, & Barkley any day. No contest! Not saying those guys are good but they’re boring.

What you call handles would have been called palming or walking during Magic's time.

How many players today could have played in the 90's if all they could do is shot a 3 and dunk?

Mutumbo would certainly play as a rim protector and Oakley could shoot. Not hard to imagine him being able to stretch it out to 3. Same for Ewing and Malone for that matter

That's what you believe in and no one is forcing you to like 80s/90s basketball. Your opinion may change perhaps as watch more of past era basketball with context instead of simply watching them as comparison to modern game. As for me, while I think that overall average skill has increased in the NBA, I still think a good number of past players will still be able to play well in todays game.

The game is played based on what the rules allow. In Bird/Magic's time, they will easily call today's dribbling palming. With that just consider how much skill Magic or Bird had to have to control the ball like they did while being more restricted by the rules.

if you prefer palming and carrying the ball I guess

Players in the modern NBA palm and carry the ball rarely.

Of course it's still there it's just alot less. The league put this in there mandate i don't even know why people argue it. It's dumb.

Not really.

Defense still exists.

Only in your little mind. If lebron didn't played in this era, you wouldn't even be saying that. As every bron stan does, prop up the era lebron is at to make him look better

Wrong. You are delusional.

As every Jordan Stan does, prop up the era of MJ in order to make him look better.

It's not like anyone can drop 40-50 points lol. Don't be delusional.

It really comes down to personal preference. I personally don't like watching post ups.

You are thinking of 60s ball.

By the 80s, the dribbling rules had been relaxed a lot (which is a great thing by the way). The dribbling rules of the 60s were way too restrictive and moronic.

I think the 90's were a special time honestly.

Especially that season where the players wore their actual jerseys for the all-star game. You had the established vets, Jordan, Barkley, Hakeem, Malone, Ewing, DRob, Pippen, Reggie, Stockton, GP, Kemp, Clyde, Shaq - and then you had all the youngins coming in Kobe, KG, Grant Hill, Penny, Nash, JKidd, Ray Allen, Vin Baker.

It was such a great mix of talent. Players really felt like superheroes back then.

That's because you were a child back then (plus you have a tendency to feel nostalgic very easily).

I understand that. It reminds me of movies in a lot of ways. Sometimes there's these pockets of time that contain a little something extra that we can't recreate presently and the 90's had a little bit of that going on. Same thing goes for music.

It really comes down to personal preference. I personally don't like watching post ups.

If I find myself in a game where it has become really competitive and everyone’s not calling fouls easily, post game comes very much in handy. Different eras, different players show me different ways to play the post. That is where my appreciation comes from even in older basketball than what Ive come accustomed to watching. Likewise, I appreciate good post skills in modern players. I feel the game is lacking if its just face up offense, 3 pt shooting game and free drive to the basket everytime. Like others said, I would like balance.

None of these 2 eras are my favorite anyways. My favorite is early 2000s first and then mid 80s

What do you mean not really lol. It's literally a fact dude. The nba put in defensive rules to increase offensive production. You realize this isn't arguable right?

Dude yeah of course. something like that isn't literal. Defense obviously still exists. It's like saying vince carter lost his hops. He can obviously still jump he just not the same. People know what you mean when you say it. Defense still exists it's just handcuffed now and it benefits offensive players. Again facts

Defenders just need to play smarter.

Don't make excuses for them.

It's not about excuses dude it just is what it is. Defenders aren't allowed playing defense as physically as they used to and this allows more freedom offensively. Again just facts buddy. It's ok to admit it.
