View Full Version : Can Embiid or Harden catch Lebron in the MVP race or is it a done deal?

Halfway through the season and Lebron is still a huge favorite for MVP. Sports betting and the media have him way out in front of the rest of the field.
Remember it is the media, the Romona Shelborns of the world, that vote for this award, so their opinion is actually the deciding factor.
is it possible for Joel Embiid and Harden to win MVP if they get their teams the 1 seed in the East and the Lakers slide down the West standings?
Or is it already over as Lebron is consistently great, as he just has to keep being Bron and regulate for the rest of the season to win MVP?

With the way the Lakers have been playing I don't think LeBron is a sure winner by any means. I think the race is pretty open.

MVP is a media award and James finally has the media on his side. Feels good, meng. :pimp:
That being said, MVP is a huge toss-up right now. It could go multiple different ways depending on the 2nd half.

I feel the 1 seed in the East is needed to have a chance at winning the award.
If the Lakers have an equal or better record than first place in the East the award is LeBron's.

It is a media award tho. It is not coaches or necessarily people skilled at basketball analysis.
I heard Stephen A say Joel wasn't close to MVP just today.
They already polled the media a couple weeks ago and it wasn't even close.
There is still half a season to go but we know how the "East is week" narrative goes. Joel and Harden are the underdogs here with a gap they need to catch up.

Well, considering that only half the season is done, a lot can change. One grievous injury, can change the MVP landscape for any of the leading candidates.
Lebron might have a bit of a sentimental advantage for a few reasons. His age, winning last year's Championship, and the fact that the media now seems to largely think that Giannis was undeserving of his two in a row. Lebron probably has the inside track, but he better not let off too much because Harden and Embiid are playing really well right now.

If Lebron wins it this year he’d be a weaker mvp winner than Derrick rose

Of course it's possible, because the media will do anything to undermine LePerfect.
If MVP was decided by some omniscient, objective being then LeStud would already have it sewn by now because he's been that good.
But spiteful humans will use any excuse to limit his achievement.

Le Bron has been consistent for a long time and it has been 8 (!) years since LeBrons last MVP so I think the media is going to reward him for consistency, especially if no one else pulls away.
Too much basketball left for Bron to have it locked up already. Embiid would just have to keep doing what he’s doing (which results into wins) and he could win it. Especially if Sixers record is better than Lakers.

wtf
The MVP award isn't for someone who is overperforming for his age. It's for a player who is most valuable to their team. If this season has shown anything for the lakers, it's how valuable davis is to the lakers, not lebron.
how is the joker not considered a better candidate than lebron? Guys averaging like 27 11 and 9

They might as well change “NBA’s Most Valuable Player” to Media NBA Player of the year. The people that vote for this award are biased sports journalist and sports tv personalities. If a player is not regularly on national tv, chances are his accomplishments are being over looked. These folks vote for who they personally like, and who they see regularly. If that media person doesn’t personally like you as a player or has some beef with you cause you won’t give them an interview or answer their questions or something, chances are you are not getting their vote.

Narrative and team record have always been the criteria for this award (in recent history). Otherwise LeSize would have like 10+. It might not be the standard you and I agree with, but it's the standard the league has allowed media members to set. Therefore there is no excuse not to bestow this year's award on LeBJ.

Which tells you how lopsided Lakers are
All depends on top 2
With one out, they have a huge drop.
Completely different for LAC or BN.

If Embiid wins the MVP this season. Kawhi would have eliminated 5 different MVPS between 3 players in 2019 playoffs, wow. That playoff run from Kawhi is like wine, gets better with age.

The MVP favorite Embiid this season.
Kawhi's playoff eliminations in 2019: 2 time MVP Curry, 2 time MVP Giannis, 1 time MVP Embiid, also Jimmy Butler who led his team to the finals.
Papa Kawhi wow
