View Full Version : Rumor: Andre Drummond could join Lakers if he gets Cavaliers buyout

The Cavaliers want to trade Andre Drummond.

But it’s not easy to trade a limited center with a $28,751,774 salary.

So, a buyout is possible – which could get Drummond to the Lakers.

Marc Stein of The New York Times:

There is optimism within the Lakers that they will get strong consideration from Andre Drummond if Drummond ultimately leaves the Cavaliers via buyout, league sources say.

Cleveland’s preference, of course, remains trading Drummond elsewhere before the March 25 trade deadline.

This is far from definite language – “optimism,” “strong consideration,” “if.” But NBA rules dictate caution when leaking information like this. Drummond is still under contract with Cleveland, after all. I infer fairly significant Drummond-to-Los Angeles momentum if he’s bought out.

The Lakers don’t exactly need another center with Anthony Davis, Marc Gasol, Montrezl Harrell and Markieff Morris.

But it’s unclear which forwards and guards will be available to Los Angeles.

Drummond could provide athletic size the Lakers lost with Dwight Howard‘s and JaVale McGee‘s departures last offseason. Drummond rebounds excellently. Perhaps, he – like McGee did in Los Angeles – would defend more effectively in a narrow role. Drummond’s effectiveness as an interior scorer and passer can drift with his focus. Again, playing for the championship-contending Lakers could bring out the best in him.

First, though, Drummond must become a free agent. The Cavs still hold the cards.

Please please let this be true. It was such a huge mistake to let both McGee and Howard go in place of a broken down Gasol. Never made any sense.

Harrell could still play the 4.
But getting Drummond would basically mean that Always Damaged wouldn't have to play any center whatsoever, which he really dislikes.

Cause he will go to the Nets right ? Nets would have the first all star starting 5.

If they got Drummond Lakers would be very flexible however added a shooter/ wing like Ariza would make a lot of sense as well. I think Drummond AND a shooter/ wing is still in cards. Or plan B Whiteside and shooter. Can give Lakers min in certain matchups and would ensure they could always have rim protection on court once AD returns. Now if they could get Drummond via buyout and trade Harrel for PJ Tucker that would lock up championship for Lakers.

Lakers were optimistic that they would get Kawhi too in 2019, see what happened? Why would the Cavs buy him out? And if they do, why would Drummond favor Lakers over other destinations like the Nets, Clippers and Mavericks?

Why would the Cavs buy him out?

Because they've been trying to trade him for a while and they can't get anyone for him. That's why this buyout of Drummond subject is discussed by sports media and on sports forums to begin with.

So why would he sign with the Lakers assuming he does get bought out? He can’t get the minutes, touches and even rebounds he needs in LA. If he actually prefers Lakers over other candidates, then a very good chance is that AD is done for the season so Drummond will get a much better role than in other teams, not sure if this is a good news for Lakers fans?

I don't know what his motives are.

But I do know that he would get plenty of minutes on the Lakers and definitely more touches than he would get next to Durant, Harden, Kyrie and now Griffin, where 80% of his field goal attempts would come from offensive rebounds. :oldlol:

Probably goes to Brooklyn or another east team.

Born in New York. Played high school and college in Connecticut. Spent like 8 years in Michigan and barely moved to go to Ohio(and Florida bubble). He has spent his entire life northeast so unless he wants a change of scenery, I'd guess he picks Nets. Or even Bucks. Milwaukee is same division as Detroit and Cleveland, the only division he has played in.

He would still get a better role and more touches with Nets than with Lakers, Lebron doesnt work well with big men. Hes not gonna be happy averaging 13/5 next to Lebron and AD.

or maybe 5/5, Lebron steals rebounds from the big men so its not going to be anywhere close to 10.

13-10 would be doable with AD and Lebron getting 8-9 and Lebron around 7-8.. a

Nah hes not getting 10 rpg next to Lebron alone, we all know what Lebron does to the big men stealing their rebounds. Now adding AD to the mix, hes gonna average 5rpg.

They were also optimistic about getting LeBron and Anthony Davis and that worked out well.

The Cavs would buy him out if they can't trade him because they want to move on from him.

He said he wanted to go to the Lakers or Nets. Probably for title chances. The Clippers and the Mavericks are less appealing in that regard.

Every single time? He's won with Bosh, Love and Davis as shooters and all of them signed max contracts after winning titles with LeBron.

That might be a reason for him to choose Los Angeles though, since he's never experienced that kind of glamorous warm climate life. He might want to, just like LeBron and AD wanted to.

LA wins titles, for one thing. But Dallas is relatively boring compared to Los Angeles. It's actually dead compared to L.A. in my experience. Totally different vibes - one is built around fun and entertainment and the other is built around corporate oil America.

then theres still Clippers who can offer him a bigger role than backup center with Lakers, also the Nets are in NYC which is a bigger and more lively city than LA.
