By actual definition, about half of the “step backs” we see in today’s game are travels. Especially where it’s step back then to the side also.

it's not just step backs. The whole more skilled thing is hilarious since you wouldn't have been able to do dribble like you do today in older eras

You could still dribble like that in the 80s.

I don't remember players palming the ball consistently before Iverson. I was taught to have my hand above the ball

Can you find an example? Pre-Iverson I don’t remember seeing a move similar to that allowed by the refs.

Huh doth my eyes deceive me? I swear he stopped his dribble for the step back and then dribbled again. Or perhaps harden truly is a sorcerer of some type

It was a hesitation that would have been called in previous eras but nowadays not so much. Maybe in the playoffs.
