I was about to say the GOAT to never win a ring, but I just learned today that the 71-72 lakers awarded him a ring even though he retired near the beginning of that season (retired right before the lakers kicked off their 33 game winning streak)

Elgin was my favorite player ever along with Wilt. His book is the best basketball player biography I've read to date and I had a correspondence with his family. Tragic to learn he has passed away.

RIP to the first player that couldn't be contained.
He's the reason the Lakers are even in Los Angeles.

RIP to the first player that couldn't be contained.
He's the reason the Lakers are even in Los Angeles.

He created the swingman and revolutionized explosiveness on the wing

He also created the Euro step but the cacs try to steal everything

RIP. My thoughts also go out to LeBron and his fans as well.

I highlighted Elgin in that hour long video years ago which I posted above - but over time slowly more footage has come to light and EVERY time, new moves are captured on film. Elgin really looks like he could do it all in my eyes, he inspired me to push my game to be able to do things like take a rebound strong on one end and dribble the length of the floor and finish strong through traffic at the rim on the other. If your team desperately needed a bucket and everyone else was cold he'd just force in some points like that and then take over with some ISO's or P&R Ball Handler action. Then another game or set of possessions he could just plunk down in the post like a center and exploit most guys in the post as well. He was a strong rebounder and especially in that footage I posted above from early in his career he had elite body control mixed with big hands much like what fans came to enjoy with players like Doctor J and MJ decades later. Even today that level of twitchiness with the ball in your hand and balance once you leave your feet is rare - I see it today in Zion but few others even guys like Kawhi might have big hands but he lacks the cat like quickness in the air. Makes for good wow factor when you watch players like that and it isn't so common despite people talking about how the game continues to evolve.

If I recall I saw him play / off the bench for the Lakers in 1971... He was a prolific scorer in the 60's.

The first basketball game I attended was in 1963 (I barely remember the night because I was five). The Lakers vs the Cincinnati Royals. . . . at the Los Angeles Sports Arena (before the Forum was built), which meant their uniform colors were blue and white . . . . featuring Elgin Baylor and Jerry West. . . . . vs Oscar Robertson.

My father's two favorite players were Bill Russell and Elgin Baylor. He was smooth like a pool shark. He made it seem like you had a chance to defend him.

One of the greatest Lakers and SFs of all time

Averaged 18 rpg as a 6'-5" SF the same year Wilt averaged 25 rpg and Oscar averaged a Triple Double.

1961-'62 had some crazy numbers.
