View Full Version : MLBPA threatens to move AS game after Georgia election reform bill
Hey Yo

MLB Players Association executive director Tony Clark announced Friday that players are ready to discuss moving this summer’s MLB All-Star game out of Atlanta after the state legislature passed a GOP-sponsored election reform bill.
Clark claims that the Georgia voting bill will make it “particularly difficult for black voters to reach the polls,” indicating the state’s bill is racist.
“Players are very much aware of the Georgia voting bill,” Clark goes on to say in the Boston Globe.
Georgia Republican Gov. Brian Kemp responded to the Left’s criticism of the bill on Thursday’s Your World, blasting H.R. 1.
“What this bill actually does is fight the rhetoric from those that are fund-raising off of this issue and polarizing it, to take away from the unconstitutional power grab of H.R. 1 that’s going on in Washington D.C. right now. It further secures our absentee ballots by mail by requiring a photo I.D., which the vast majority of Georgians support. It is also adding days of early voting on the weekends. We’re expanding the right to vote in Georgia. You’re not hearing that from the other side. That’s what the truth is, as well as further securing absentee ballot boxes, which didn’t exist before.
“It’s completely contrary to what they’re trying to do in D.C. by doing away with the state’s photo I.D. requirement, by doing away with it being illegal to harvest ballots in Georgia [and] making that mandatory at the federal level. I fought very hard for over a decade to keep our voter rolls secure. You wouldn’t be able to do that with H.R. 1. So I think the people really need to look at who is trying to restrict things. It’s the Democrats in Washington, not Republicans that continue to make it easy to vote and hard to cheat.”

Good it’s a ridiculous bill. The fact you’d make it illegal to give out water and food to people waiting in line is all you need to know about this ridiculous bill. It’s an overreaction because it’s the first time the GOP lost Georgia in decades.

Even third world countries require an ID for voting in elections. Dems obviously dont want it because it would eliminate ballot harvesting and they wouldn't win anything outside of deep blue areas.

If you want to vote, you should be able to show proof of who you are. Simple as that. Don't like it? Stay home.

and this is why I have quit watching ALL sports including the NBA. I only come to the politcal section here now after bullcrap like this, NBA and NFL pushing BLM and kneeling for the flag/anthem, as well as LeBron not having the balls to call out China. Heck I do not even support the local high school sports because they are kneeling for something other than prayer.

The bill is an indefensible assault on democracy. Acts of preotest like this would be are absolutely warranted. Can't hand out water bottles? Shutting down the booths at 5pm? And then the fact that the "problem" this is solving doesn't exist? Georgia passed one of the most screwed up pieces of legislation since the banning of segregation.

And then the fact that the "problem" this is solving doesn't exist? Georgia passed one of the most screwed up pieces of legislation since the banning of segregation.
I don't know exactly what the legislation says and I am open to someone educating me.
However, if the idea is that requiring voter IDs is somehow oppressing blacks, that viewpoint is the racist viewpoint. The idea that blacks don't have IDs or don't know to carry their IDs or don't know how to produce their IDs is repugnant and racist, which is hypocritical to say the least. I'm not exactly sure how this is worth mentioning in the same breath as segregation.
However, let's keep going and looking a tad bit further.
Quoted text from one of the articles:
"Among highlights, the bill would require a photo ID in order to vote absentee by mail, after more than 1.3 million Georgia voters used that option during the COVID-19 pandemic.
This is not racist against blacks or minorities. Indeed, the opposite is true, it is extremely racist to suggest that blacks or other minorities don't have IDs and or don't know to carry their IDs or produce their IDs.
It also would cut the time period people have to request an absentee ballot
Reducing the time period in terms of calendar days that people have to request absentee ballots is not racist against blacks or minorities. Indeed, it is racist to suggest that blacks or minorities would be less likely to know about these changes and would be unable to adjust accordingly.
I am curious, however, as to the reason that they are suggesting cutting the time period in terms of calendar days. Is it somehow linked to not revamping the process that might result in an unreasonable amount of time post election to determine election results? I genuinely don't know. It's interesting and I want to hear about the motivation for this specifically.
and limit where ballot drop boxes can be placed and when they can be accessed."
Now we actually do have a valid concern here that may potentially indeed be racist against blacks and or other minorities. Limiting where ballot drop boxes can be placed and when they can be accessed could definitely indeed be racist, depending on the specifics of the logistics here, which are apparently not disclosed in these articles. However, generally speaking, limiting drop boxes and limiting times is not good for equality of opportunity to vote. This is a valid concern and it very well may indeed be incredibly racist.
If I had to guess I would say that it's improbable that racism is the underlying motivation for this type of behavior, but it very well could be and it's worth looking at.
It's likely that it's gerrymandering, which is something that both political parties do.
"One of the biggest changes in the bill would give the GOP-controlled legislature more control over election administration, a change that has raised concerns among voting rights groups that it could lead to greater partisan influence.
I'm not entirely sure here what might be racist. Please educate me. But based off of the quick blurb, greater partisan influence? Democrats and Republicans both are constantly playing these games and gerrymandering is a real thing that happens over and over. It is not racist. It is them trying to stack the deck in their favor. Politicians do not care about the public. They care about themselves and remaining in power. It is an unfortunate yet natural and expected fact of life that they would try to stack the deck in their favor.
"The bill would replace the elected secretary of state as the chair of the state election board with a new appointee of the legislature after Republican Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger rebuffed Trump's attempts to overturn Georgia's election results. It would also allow the board to remove and replace county election officials deemed to be underperforming."
I'm not entirely sure here what might be racist. Please educate me. See the above point.

Hilarious that this hurts people that had nothing to do with the bill.
Taking away tourism for black owned businesses in Atlanta to try and punish a white politician in a suit. I doubt the politicians care, they are still making the same amount. But businesses that would have seen a surge in profits won't get that extra income.
Good job mlb in punishing black owned Atlanta businesses.

What a stupid thing for the MLB to do. Punishing people who need this revenue to survive just because the suits in the MLB caved to the woke mob when they haven't even read the bill themselves.

I could be incorrect, but it just seems to be a bunch of people getting upset about things because other people told them they should be upset. I still haven't seen it clearly articulated by anyone as to how this is potentially anything other than gerrymandering, which all political parties do. I definitely haven't seen it articulated as to how this bill is racist, specifically. As I said, just a bunch of people getting riled up about click-bait headlines and soundbites. I am open to someone changing my mind.

It's called manufacturing consent and it's why no lib is able to come back to this thread and explain why they are right in the face of logical questions.
Instead, any opinion expressed here by libs were donr early and reflected the same talking points as they heard somewhere online or on TV.

All you have to say is if the GOP won comfortably would they have done this hell no. There’s many things that makes this Bill more restrictive. Drop boxes become way more limited. The days and hours to vote will be shortened. Voters will have less time to request absentee ballots from 180 days to 70. Already long wait times will be even more crazy. Also limiting mail in voting might hurt the GOP just as much as a good chunk of their voters use this method (elderly). All in all after losing for the first time in decades this reeks of desperation to stay in power.

The idea that this is Jim Crow on sterioids is ridiculous hyperbole. The lengths that the southern democrats went to disenfranchise black voters from the end of reconstruction far exceeded this GA legislation. Rather, it seems that the democrats strategy for winning elections is all about volume of voters. They figure that the higher the turnout the better their chances of winning are. Anything that would have a detrimental impact on voter turnout (whether it is voter apathy, voter ID, smaller window for voting) they consider as harmful to their chances of winning.
However, is there any proof that the democrats have a worse chance of winning elections with lower turnout? Why would would be democrat voters be less committed voters or less likely to have an ID? Has there been a case study on this that really supports the contention that this is more harmful to the democrats than their counterparts in the republican party?

I don't know every law by state but none of it changes the fact it hurt a lot of black people that could have improved their life. Same for white people, I don't care about the race but other people do. The only color I care about is green. Whether you agree with the bill or not, they hurt a lot of innocent people.
Think of it like this....some shooter is opening fire on everybody. You don't just openly kill all of the bystanders as well when you shoot him.
