The 1985 NBA draft is the most underappreciated draft class ever. It is never talked about as one of the greatest draft classes and that is absurd.

From top to bottom, possibly the deepest class ever, It’s crazy that it only gets mentioned as the Lottery draft or the Patrick Ewing draft. It was much more than that.

The draft before (1984) has the 4 Hall of Famers that get praise, well so did this one. 85 top spot was a foreign center as well, big Patrick Ewing. Jordan’s nemeses in Chicago all those seasons, Joe Dumars is here. One of the 2 best power forwards of this era, Karl Malone. And sharpshooting Chris Mullin rounds out the Hall of Famer list. The 84 draft had three Dream Teamers, well so did the 85 draft. Even the overseas connection from 84 (Oscar Schmidt) is here with Arvydas Sabonis.

Other All-Stars and/or All-NBA Teamers in the draft include Detlef Schrempf, Charles Oakley, Terry Porter, Xavier McDaniel, AC Green and Michael Adams.

And a bunch of other noticeable players in the league for a long time like Wayman Tisdale, Benoit Benjamin, John Koncak, Sam Mitchell, Mario Ellie, Tyrone Corbin, John Hot Rod Williams, Joe Kleine, Gerald Wilkins and the attractions like Spud Webb and Manute Bol.

Were does the 1985 draft rank to you guys?

Wasn't it rigged so the Knicks could get Ewing? And correct me if I'm wrong, but IIRC Arvydas Sabonis was drafted in 1986.

Sabonis was drafted at least a couple of times I believe. Atlanta took him once I think before Portland got him later

I have checked it in Google and you are right. Drafted by Atlanta in 1985 and by Portland in 1986. Great to see that there are posters who can teach me about NBA history here.

Crazy to see how Ewing, McDaniel, and Oakley all ended up on the same team eventually.

Yes. Some decent front office people in this draft as well.

David stern rigged that draft and gave Knicks the #1 pick, but since then they have never had any luck in draft lottery again. Karma.

Patrick Ewing = probably top 5 most hyped, dead-certain to be drafted #1 whichever team gets the pick of all time, before or since the 1985 draft

I agree that it is one of the most underrated and deepest draft classes, and that it is absurd it is not discussed more. There were a lot of Big East legends chosen in this draft. Adrian Branch, who was a stud at Maryland, I'm not sure why he didn't transition well to the NBA. And we got Bol in this draft class for a second time.

1987 had a similarly talented group bannered by David Robinson, Scottie Pippen, Reggie Miller, Kevin Johnson and Horace Grant.

After that you have guys like Reggie Lewis, Mark Jackson, Derrick Mckey, Armen Gilliam, Kenny Smith, Mugsey Bougues, Sarunas Marciulonis, Ken Norman, Reggie Williams, Olden Polynice etc.

Not sure if its better compared to the 85 draft but both these classes are obviously underrated.

This was a great group of guys, you have a guy like Michael Adams, who could really shoot the three, he was almost as good as JEff Hornacek, Freid Hoiberg, Kyle Korver, Steve Novak, Adam Morrison, Nick Fazekas, Tom SAvage, Matt MAloney, Doug Altenberger, Luke Hancock, Brian Boddicker, and of course Jason MAtthews. How well do you think Red Kerr and Jerry Sloan would have shot from distance?

The best drafts happened between 1979-1998.
