Things like this happen a whole lot more often than most people realize. Not so much the police, but people claiming to be active duty military so that they can get free stuff or preferential treatment is definitely a thing. It's not that difficult to do, either. You can buy a uniform online or at a thrift shop, pick up a few medals at a pawn shop or on Ebay, and purchase a fake military ID. Then you're all set. Sometimes restaurants will comp your meals, sometimes another customer will pick up the bill for you. Go to a ball game, and an usher might move you down to a better seat. Plane flight? You might get moved up to first class, or someone in first class might switch with you. Lots of other nice perks as well, just because you're wearing a uniform. Sometimes people will ask to see your military ID, but most civilians have no idea what a real military ID looks like.

Navy SEALS seem to be an especially popular target for fakes. For a while there was a former SEAL who would post Youtube videos every week where he would expose someone claiming to be a former or current SEAL as a fake.
