He needs to at least finish the remaining part of his career as a decent player to make it to HOF. 12PPG / 5RPG won’t cut it, even 6th man in todays league average like 12PPG.

If the question here is whether he might suck so bad that he will nullify his resume, he needs to be the worst player in the NBA, and if that happens he will retire a lot sooner before he puts his HOF in question. He's an outlier then. Most great defensive players put up elite defensive stats or metrics. Klay never has. People just think he's good because he defends the star guard on the opposing team but even then has still gotten lit up many times.

He's not an elite defender, but I don't think many think he is. But he is willing to do the dirty work and isn't a big liability on defense. Yeah some guards torch him, but some guards are almost unstoppable today regardless of how good the defender is.

He plays smart, fits the team defensive scheme well, has decent size and length and works hard. His defensive game isn't what makes him a hall of gamer, but it isn't hurting his case either.

If he comes back with shit lateral movement with his touch he can average 12PPG
