I think play-in becomes successful, there are fewer teams without goals and it increased importance of the last games of the season.

Now, there are battles for:

6th seed - to attend playoffs
7th and 8th seeds - to have advantage in play-in
10th seed - attend play-in

However, playing one game still sounds bad. It must be at least 3 games series with homecourt advantage. Like this:

7th vs 8th: winner of three games
Game 1: court of 7th
Game 2: court of 8th
Game 3: court of 7th

Additional Tournement

Play-in could probably last 2 weeks and there would be a two-week gap before playoffs. I think a tournament (without teams attend play-in) could be played during this time.

I sugest it like this:

- Tournament would be in a few cities like the Olympics and World Cup.
- Cities must be different each year. They could be cities that are close to each other in the USA or even other countries. Like: England in 2022, Japan in 2023 etc.
- It won't be series, just one game win to reach the next round. Champion would play only 4 or 5 games.
- The teams that can not attend play-in (except worst 2) would play each other to reach top 16.
- There will be awards like FMVP, all-tournament team etc.
