I would say the 80s held the title for the highest skilled era. But that has been surpassed by this year.

Today:

Center - Jokic / Embiid - your two highest skilled centers to ever play the game next to Kareem in their primes today.
Power forward - Duncan
Small Forward - LeBron - highest skilled small forward of all time.
Shooting Guard - Jordan
Point Guard - Steph Curry / Harden / Doncic - Highest skilled point guards to ever play the game.

3 out of 5 of NBA positions right now are held by the absolute highest skilled players to ever play at their positions. And it isn't even close.

This is the most competitive era ever. Every position is stacked right now.

What a time to watch NBA basketball. All of these players will be in the playoffs. :applause:

In terms of peremiter play, yes. The shooting and ball handling is better today than in previous eras, athletes are also better. I still think big men in previous eras were more skilled in terms of post play.

Yes, Gary Payton would pretty much be patrick beverly in today's era.Just a feisty pitbull guard archetype.Who does a lot of yelling anytime he makes a play so people think "wow he really plays defense" Draymond esque

Michael Jordan would be "just another guy". Pretty Much Derozan on the Spurs with a boost of speed or a a shorter Brandon ingram with a speed burst

If you plopped Reggie Evans off in the 90s in place of Dennis Rodman the bulls wouldn't miss a beat....If you plopped a jakar sampson off in the 80s he would of been a 1st ballot hall of farmer..If you dropped Javale McGee off in the 60 it would of been 2 wilts instead of one in the league

Walton was as skilled as both, so was Hakeem, David Robinson and if you believe Lebron is more skilled than Bird then so are Shaq and Moses than either center.

Barkley, Malone, McHale, Dirk and Garnett to name a few are easily in Duncans skill ballpark. There's nobody in this eea who's remotely close (yet).

You could have brought up Wade who's skillset reflected a young Jordan pretty much.

Magic, Kidd, Nash were pretty skilled in their own right.

It's actually not the starplayers they're always otherworldly skilled compared to their own era and I'd argue you could drop any superstar from the 80s to now into the NBA with a month of training and they'd succeed.

The role players make it interesting. Never ever have role players been able to shoot so well. Since most systems and the rule changes gear towards shooting this is pretty much displayed any game. Your run of the mill superstar will still score between 25 and 35 like 20, 30 years back, but the Steve Kerr types score 15 a game and there are multiple of them.

In terms of diversity in roles yes. Nearly every player in the league can play multiple positions. That wasn't the case back then where.younplayed traditional positions. There is just more diversity. A player like Ben Simmons wouldn't be as critiqued tosay for a lack of a 3 point game. The evolution is apparent

lebron the highest skilled small forward? LMFAO!!

travelling, flopping and stiff arming are not skills. he's one of the most athletic, but he's nowhere near the highest skilled small forward of all time.

OP is retarded.

Yea but kawhi and Durant are the most skilled SF of all time.

While curry and kyrie irving are the most skilled point guards of all time.

This is easily the toughest era to win a championship as well. All the stars have stars next to them, you don't get lucky and have to face Chauncey billups in the finals. 2005 pistons level team is like a 1st round team in today's era.

No, you just get lucky and have Durant and Klay get injured during the series.

of course. IDK how you can even argue against this. A way larger amount of people are playing hoops worldwide. People base their skills on what works in previous generations. Groundbreaking strategies of previous eras are now widely understood and commonplace. Dribble moves invented by the greatest guards to play the game have been adopted by the next wave of guys.

Yet none of the top 10 players today are better than the top 10 players in the 80s/90s. Really says a lot.

Wrong.

LeBron is the best passing small forward of all time.
Can score from triple threat position.
Inside, midrange, 3s.

I agree that this is the toughest era to win a championship. Even the 2021 Clippers are no joke historically. Nobody wants to face them in the playoffs.

I would say Durant and Kawhi are right in the top 4 for small forwards. LeBron -> Bird -> Durant -> Kawhi.

Yes its the most skilled

But at the same time, the era with the softest and most convenient rules.

So that balances it out

Your on crack if you think jokic and Embiid are anywhere close to the best centers in previous eras.

Small fowards are definitely better though

Point gaurds are a tricky one because of the era. The game has changed because of the rules and style of play that mostly benefit gaurds. There were plenty of gaurds in previous era's that could do what gaurds now do but there job wasn't to look for there own shot as much. It was to facilitate and get the ball to the post.

Not sure, no ones allowed to play defense, so offensive skill can't be determined properly.

Players are scared to defend

Every kid in the corner is doing advanced dribbling allowed nowadays. Yeah sure, players back then if given the chance to grow up playing todays game wont learn it.

Bird was a better passer. Lebron is so overrated as a passer.

Lebron's midrange jumper is broke and he doesn't take any contested 3's. and of course, we all know he commits offensive fouls to score on the inside.

for shooting, handles and scoring without a doubt. 70's-80's was preferably the golden era of passing
