View Full Version : If 3>2 why do defenders sag off to help contest a 2 giving up a wide open 3?

I literally see this shit happen 50 times a game. It makes no sense. Defenders will leave there man who's a great 3 point shooter to sag or help when someone as bad as bad as draymond green has the ball. Even without the wack rules this is easily the worst defensive era ever.

The most efficient shots are dunks/layups. Peventing those will always take priority over defending 3s.
Now if someone leaves a 3 pt shooter to help on a guy shooting a 15 footer that is just dumb.

I've never understood it either
I play help defense to an extent, but if I know the only thing the guy does is catch and shoot.. I never leave him no matter what. There's a guy I know that plays at a church where people gather and that's all he does. And he's never scored a point on me. But he scores quite a bit with others guarding him and it's simply because they don't stay on him.

Yeah if i guy beats his man and he has an open lane you have to help. It's not just that though. Guys are sagging off their man who's a great shooter to anticipate a Mediocre scorer penetrating.

They only do that if a star offensive player has a good look inside the arc. Its better to live with a 3 rimming out than a certain basket or free throws.

No they don't. They do it even when non threats have the ball. It happens all the time.
And in most cases i'd rather a contested 2 from a great scorer than an open 3 from a lesser player.

I agree, it is meaningless unless you force a long pass over multiple players.

Great scorers will either get an almost certain bucket, FTs (and your defenders in foul trouble), or an AND1.
The only time role players get doubled off of is if the defense knows they're poor passers and they do it to try and force a turnover and get a transition opportunity. Otherwise they don't get helped off of.

When you double Curry he passes Green to play 4 vs 3. Bazemore, Wiggins and Looney are the other players.
When you double Booker he passes Paul to play 4 vs 3. Bridges, Crowder and Ayton are the other players.

What boggles my mind is why not pick out the worst roleplayer out of every line up and say "he's going to have to beat us" and just force them to make every shot, especially if it's a three. I'm not saying leave them wide open and give them all day but give them space and then run at them once they are passed the ball.
