Teams in Europe frequently have some political relation as well, some are considered working class, some left wing, some have roots in fascism, some for the rich, some for the poor, so these games become an extension of class warfare.

Actually it is mostly true for football/soccer. However basketball in Europe is popular in Balkans, not popular in west except Spain. In Balkans, people don't even need class conflict to be fanatic fans for their teams. Because balkan people are mostly fanatics. Not only for teams, also fanatic for politics, religions even foods.
