"One of the more pretentious political self-descriptions is 'Libertarian.' People think it puts them above the fray. It sounds fashionable, and to the uninitiated, faintly dangerous. Actually, it's just one more bullshit political philosophy."
That was a quote from my man, George Carlin.
And you know what? He's 100% right.
Libertarians are right wing nerds who think the world can be run like Fallout 3. They think they're cool ass Clint Eastwood gunslingers -- men with no names. Powerful bad-asses that run the show.
The truth? They have no understanding of how the world works.

Way to generalize :facepalm
A lot of them seem to want to be left the **** alone. I guess that's dangerous though. :facepalm
The right wing Trumptard nut jobs on this site are way worse.

There’s no such thing as a libertarian. You’re either an anarchist or a statist.

Libertarian is closer to anarchist than you may realize. Of course, anarchy goes all the way to the extreme of full self-government. Libertarian can be pro-government or anti-government afaik as long as the government is limited in power and size.
I recall reading somewhere that US politics has completely changed the definition of liberal and libertarianism over the past 60-70yrs. They are trying to fit everything on a single dimensional left-right scale, which is completely idiotic & narrow way of thinking. It screws up the entire scale to force economics and politics on a single dimension scale.

I would agree with Carlin's quote in the OP. People like that are posers who have delusions of grandeur.
People that fanatically believe in rugged individualism are pretty deluded - as a species we are incredibly dependent on other people to function, whether it be in producing food, providing healthcare or education. Moreover, virtually every act that we engage in and every behavior that we perform has an impact on the lives of other people so its not like we can do whatever we want without regard to the consequences of our actions.
It's a form of narcissism.

Libertarians are wannabe anarchists, but won’t go all the way. So they pick and choose when they feel they need big government to protect them just like any other political group.

Pretty dumb of him to say. I align a lot closer to libertarian than any other party. I don’t really think of myself as “above the fray”. What does that even mean anyway? You ask anyone who is a democrat or republican, and it’s almost guaranteed they think of themselves as above others from different political ideologies. Most people are probably more libertarian than they think. If you don’t feel you fit in either party, there’s a chance you may be a libertarian and not even realize it.

I basically said everyone is prone to thinking they are “above the fray”. So what? Based on the statement in this thread, George Carlin said a whole lot of nothing too.

Libertarians are screwy but I would take them over the brain dead liberals of 2021.

Libertarian capitalists are nowhere close to anarchism lol. Really wish people would find out what anarchy means.

That's why you can have libertarian capitalists and libertarian socialists. The latter is getting close to anarchy but not quite there - think of mahatma Gandhi. Gandhi would probably be considered a libertarian socialist, but he was certainly no anarchist. Rand Paul would be an example of libertarian capitalist. Rand Paul and Gandhi have nothing in common with economics but their politics might have quite a bit in common.

My theory is this. Being Liberal or Conservative is based heavily on age.
When you're young, you want everything handed to you with minimal work. You have an entitlement complex. That's basically a Liberal.
Once you get older you turn Conservative because you realize all the "free hand outs" aren't actually free. Instead it's coming from your tax dollars, which means you're paying to support the younger generation.
Free healthcare, daycare, education etc. sounds nice until it's coming out of your pocket.

This is a bait thread.
You’re either an anarchist or a statist.
The Earth is rudderless. At the core of it all is anarchy. It is undeniable that the most powerful people in the world do not play by any set of rules. They make them up as they go and pretend to play by the rules to appease people from time to time. Most people do not live this way, obviously, so therefore our society is not completely anarchist but ultimately? It's all chaos, unless you believe that a higher power is in control.

It's all bullshit. Libertarian is an ideal construct just as liberal, conservatives, etc are. We're all living in a grey inbetween of policies that are trying to solve problems that may or may not be real and may or may not be self-inflicted from misdiagnosis

Libertarians are like marxists, both live in their imaginary worlds, effectively stuck in the idealistic, adolescent stage of psychological development.
