It’s because she probably greatly exaggerated the damages to her grandmother’s house. If she accepted the money there would have been tons of attention on it with people following up. She would have been exposed for not only being dishonest in order to fulfill her agenda, but being fraudulent as well. If she denies the money and stays quiet she can sit and wait till the whole thing falls back out of the news cycle.
