What if the team who is leading uses all 5 of their guys to form an inpregnable ring around the ball as it rolls inbounds and eventually becomes stationary?

The shotclock doesnt start until someone touches the ball. So 5 guys on offense could lock arms and form a ring which would not let any opponent in to touch the ball.

Does this work?

Hell no. Good way to lose the game by letting the defender get the ball :oldlol:

Some exotic full court press would end that idea real quick. Coach would be on the hot seat for even trying something so stupid.

Coaches and teams in general are afraid to try new things at the pro level. Staff in basketball is all about keeping your job and not rocking the boat. If you try something that could work and it doesn't, you get fired. If you try something that should work and it doesn't, you can blame something or someone else. Everyone with eyes or ears behind the scenes seems to have reiterated this same sentiment.

But what OP's suggesting is retarded for obvious reasons. You can simply push people out of the way with enough contact that it's not a foul and force them to contact the ball and then what do you have? A defense that's set and an offense that isn't. You accomplished nothing.

Nba experimented with wacky delay of game strategy in the 00's by chucking the ball in the air to run out the clock. Here's why you haven't seen any of that stuff like you're proposing since then...

He's not in the league because his knees are busted. Lin was following coach's orders and Kobe was just being his narcissistic self.

No, it doesn't work. First of all, what is the offensive team attempting to accomplish? All they're doing is making themselves look like fools and pissing off the fans.

Secondly, the officials wouldn't just stand there. Once the offenses intention has become clear, the head coach of that team would be informed that his team has thirty (or whatever) seconds to put the ball into play. If they don't the coach will be assessed a technical foul under section 5a of the NBA rules:

Section V—Conduct

a

An official may assess a technical foul, without prior warning, at any time. A technical foul(s) may be assessed to any player on the court or anyone seated on the bench for conduct which, in the opinion of an official, is detrimental to the game. The technical foul must be charged to an individual. A technical foul cannot be assessed for physical contact when the ball is alive.

That "conduct detrimental to the game" is intentionally vague, to give the officials the flexibility to handle unanticipated situations. If the ball still hasn't been touched, start the time again. A second tech ejects the coach. The referee will keep calling technical fouls as much as necessary. If the offensive team is absolutely determined not to touch the ball under any circumstances, eventually they'll forfeit the game because they don't have any players left.
