It's obvious why they did it, as is every terrible idea to expand the postseason in any sport, to make more money. But this one is honestly the worst I've seen in any sport that. The college football regular season had always been the most important of any sport, in the old format you lost 1 game your title hopes could seriously be over, even in the 4 team format 2 losses could mean the same thing.
Now, with 12 teams? Regular season means absolutely nothing. Sure, you could play for a bye which is obviously advantageous, but those monster top 5 regular season matchups lose virtually all their importance now, as does the final week of the season where title contenders were at legitimate risk of missing their chance at the title. They traded in the importance of their entire regular season, the best thing college football had going for it, for 1-2 extra playoff games.
