As Ben is a terrible free throw shooter do you personally think it would serve to help his percentage at the line if he decided to go underhanded from now on?

I mean Barry convinced his teammate, George Johnson, to use the technique, and Johnson’s free throw percentage increased from 41.2% in his rookie season to a 69.4% career mark so there are examples of the technique helping players that really struggle at the line.

Every player that shoots below 60% should go underhand but nobody ever does it.

No. I think it is naive to think that suddenly changing your shot to granny-style will fix it. You actually have to practice them.

This is Rick Barry's son. He shot them at 85% during his 3 years in the g-league and 80% during college. He has practiced them for his whole life. That means at least 20 years of practice with Rick as your coach will give you 80-85%. What Ben Simmons needs to do is practice shooting for the rest of his career.

Ding ding ding. The social stigma is unbearable

The social stigma of being paided millions to play a children's game and being unable to shoot 60% on FTs, something you've practiced your whole life, ought to be unbearable.
That shit would get you benched in some parts of Europe, especially if you are a perimeter player.

I actually looked this up, this year in ER 50 players shot over 85% on FT(ER has 18 teams)
This year in the NBA it was 38 and the NBA has 30 teams.

I had always felt like euroleague players shot better from the line but I didnt expect the difference to be this stark oof.

In Ben's mind, there's a chance girls will look at him differently for being the only player in the nba shooting free throws like a 5 year old.

I did the math, league average for euroleague this year was 84%, NBA was 78% (the highest ever)

I wonder why this is.

I thought in America being weird is the cool thing to do.

Maybe shooting underhand can become an oppressed identity, he can go on TV and talk about the stigma and the oppression of his people, how we need more underhand FT voices in hollywood etc.
This could be grift for him.
