According to the NBA's player tracking data, the Clippers shot 16-of-28 and scored 44 points when Rudy Gobert was the primary defender last night.

Of course not. Shitty D. Late closeouts. Outworked by Batum. Invited into the paint and scored on at will by rookies. Attacked ruthlessly while gimping around exaggerating minor pains. 200mil! :facepalm

This guy is an overpriced Roy Hibbert. Jazz shot themselves in the foot with that contract.

"The problem is if I don't come and help, we give up layups. . . The gameplan was for us to let Terance Mann shoot rather than letting Reggie Jackson or PG get layups." - Rudy Gobert on his defense

he's wrong?

Ty Lue's switch to a small lineup was the difference again. Terance Mann scored 30 of his 39 with Rudy Gobert as the primary defender. Mann is the 3rd player to score 30 vs a single primary defender in a playoff game since ESPN tracked in 2014. He's first with 30 on 80% shooting.

the difference was COTY not countering anything that Lue did. Made his job easy for him

You do realize the counter move to make was benching Rudy right?

that's a move that could have been tried. Doubt it would have helped. Bigger issues than the guy trying to guard everyone.

Sarah Todd: Dennis Lindsey comments on Rudy Gobert’s fall in Game 6. Said there was a pretty big contusion but that Rudy wouldn’t be told he couldn’t play. (https://*********.com/social/) All testing and imaging went well and no further injury was there.

thanks for the effort as always. If everyone gave the effort that you, Conley and O'Neale do things would be different

Didnt you say maybe Conley shouldnt have played in light of his subpar play?

Now you give Gobert props for being a liability?

obviously Conley shouldn't have been playing but he gave it his all in a desperate situation. Didn't say Gobert was a liability. Said he played hurt. What were their options without him?

It clearly would have helped. Stop being delusional. He can’t guard the perimeter.

who would have been able to guard the perimeter and the rim at the same time? He's the only rim protector and one of only a few guys that play defense at all

If you watched the game and thought Rudy was guarding the perimeter or the rim well idk what to tell you. He got barbecued.

He can't guard 5 guys. Not something I've ever argued. Pretty sure no one that has ever played can

This ****** stole the DPOY from Anthony Davis in 2020.

There's no more DPOYs coming for Gobert. The media is done giving this guy any awards. Watch I will be right about this.

He literally couldn’t guard anyone last night. At the rim or on the perimeter. He choked. Deal with it.

Big men have to be able to switch & defend out to the perimeter in modern nba. If they can't then they become a liability. That was exactly what the Clippers exploited with Gobert on Mann yesterday.

Rudy is a great post-defender but his perimeter defense is not very good. It's not hard to exploit that by bringing him outside to the perimeter. In that case, you need a capable PF to go help in the post and also the center able to close out on the perimeter. Unfortunately, Utah usually played Gobert with 4 perimeter shooters so none of the perimeter players can go help out down low if Rudy leaves to go help on the perimeter. Rudy isn't very good on the perimeter either.

Combine both factors, and it's not hard to take advantage of the situation. You just have to go small yourself too, which is what Clippers usually did with Morris at the 5. Occasionally they had Zubac out there, but he typically made them worse. It's a tough situation to be in as the Jazz and a matchup nightmare. You don't have many other options defensively - your only real options are to bench Rudy to go small or just roll the dice. If your shot is not falling to carry you with the offense, then you are completely f*cked. Exactly what happened yesterday.

"My job is to make sure that guys don't get shots in the paint first and then obviously, there's some situations when teams try to draw me in to kick out to the 3s," Gobert said. "But the problem is if I don't come and help, it's layups."

In Game 6, the Jazz had him stick close to the paint to avoid open shots at the rim — but he can't be in two places at one.

"The game plan that we chose was that it was better to give up a Terance Mann 3 than a Reggie Jackson, (Paul George), even Kawhi (Leonard) early on, layups," he continued.

"Terance Mann did a great job knocking down shots. I thought we tried to adjust and go into full rotation, but the few times when I didn't come and help, it ended up in layups. I trusted the game plan to help my teammates. ... They did a great job moving the ball, played the right way every single possession, and that's what good teams do."

He mentioned that it takes all five players working together to be good defensively.

"Everyone on their team raised their level and it was hard for us to get them as a team," Gobert said, before adding, "It starts with one on one."
Gobert said it was frustrating to end the season in the second round after having such high expectations, especially by losing four straight.
"You try to ask yourself the right questions about what we can do so it stops happening," Gobert said.

The hate on Gobert parade is corny, but yesterday he was a liability. No way around it. He's a slow rotator, and the Clippers did a great job making him scramble. By the time Gobert got back into the paint, well shit you saw what Mann did to him. Can't just blame him for the Clippers shooting, but he did nothing to help.

yeah, we know you didnt say Gobert was a liability, im just saying what happened.

its funny you said maybe conley shouldnt have played, yet at the same time give gobert props, even though he was far worse than conley.

It's one thing if he had been amazing protecting the rim & helping, but he got burned contesting shots inside as well in that 2nd half. Players have off-nights on the defensive end.
