View Full Version : Does winning less = more winning?

MJ only made 6 Finals, which means he won a lot fewer playoff series and games in general, he fizzled out quickly. Also, his success was shackled to one player (Scottie Pippen).
LeBron is 1st all time in playoff series wins among #1 options. He has literally won more. The numbers don't lie:
Playoff series wins
LeBron = 39
Duncan = 35
Kobe = 33
Pippen = 33
Shaq = 32
Magic = 32
Jordan = 30
It's just not close. Landslide honors for the King.
If MJ had won more playoff series he could have added to his fragile career. As we all now know, the ● Goat standard ● is 39 playoff series wins. Good luck, Kevin, Luka, and Trae.

I can appreciate the attempt to apply Reaganomics to basketball but can't shake the feeling that you should be beaten to death with a lead pipe.

You gotta be a millennial. It's the only generation that was coddled with participation awards.

OP probably thinks the 90's Bills are the GOAT NFL team for holding the record for most consecutive Super Bowl appearances even though they lost all 4.

Nope. 4 playoff series wins and 1 chip is greater than 100 playoff series wins and no chips. You play to win it all

How was jason terry able to outscore Legoat? I assume it was very difficult. They mustve both averaged like 40+ ppg

Is that when Mj set the yet-to-be-broken playoff scoring record or is there another cool story behind this number?

Wow. Thats just gotta be a glitch, theres just no way Legoat could be a huge loser in the finals. No way at all

Put it in the trophy case next to his 3 lottery teams, 6 finals L’s, most turnovers in NBA playoff history, and most missed shots in playoff history

Playoff series wins
LeBron = 39
Duncan = 35
Kobe = 33
Pippen = 33
Shaq = 32
Magic = 32
Jordan = 30
The main pattern here is Jordan played with another star with a lot of playoff series wins: Pippen. Same with Kobe & Shaq. Lebron & Duncan, on the other hand, are the true winners. It's reflected in the all time playoff win shares as well.

Rank Player WS
1. LeBron James 55.68
2. Michael Jordan* 39.76
3. Tim Duncan* 37.84
4. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar* 35.56
5. Magic Johnson* 32.
This idea of 2nd place is the same as last place, only a ring counts is nothing but a narrative. It's more complex than that. By that flawed measure, Billups or Iggy are greater players than Malone, Barkley, or Iverson. If I am never the top earner in a year but I consistently have a yearly increase in wealth that is in the top 2 to 5 every year for a long time, I could still end up the wealthiest in the world. I could just be always #2 every year and still end up the valedictorian at graduation. All that has to happen is for my rival to have a bad year or two.
Finally, going by "2nd place and lower is nothing but a participation award" logic, Jordan barely cracks the all time top 10.

With either consistent measure, Jordan is never the GOAT. Only way for Jordan to be GOAT is via a cherry picked narrative, not via a reasonable metric applied consistently.

We all know he played in the LEast...no one is impressed.
We provided enough data to show how weak his opposition was most years, but you ignore it every single time.
You never use context and you cherry pick your data.
There's 2 main reasons his finals record is so pathetic..
1. It was the point of the playoffs he finally reached REAL opposition
2. He chose empty stats over winning.
Even after colluding, his record is horrid and the collusion makes the legacy even worse.
Quite pathetic really.
You can continue to be the forums mentally ill grandpa...or you can accept the truth.
His days are done
