View Full Version : If Worthy had died as Len did after being drafted in 82 how does the 1980's change.

Do you think the Showtime Lakers would have suffered as much as the Celtics did when Bias died?

Also, do you think the Showtime Lakers still win rings in 85 and 87 plus 88 without Worthy in the lineup?

Both the 82 Lakers and 86 Celtics in this alternate universe after winning the title would have drafted two potential SF superstars that both would pass away in tragic fashion.

The Lakers in this alternate universe after Worthy's death in 82 would still have Magic entering his prime and Kareem still being a superstar as well up until to 86.

So therefore maybe in this alternate universe Magic has to become more of a scorer as he was in 1990 to make up for the loss of Worthy's production.

Without Worthy on the Lakers in this alternate universe

The way we view Magic and Bird nowadays changes a ton.

Bird not only would have beaten Magic in back to back finals in 84 and 85 he would also have three-peated from 84 to 86 along with winning 3 straight regular-season Mvps and maybe 3 straight final Mvps.

Cooper and Scott would play bigger roles and they wouldn't trade Norm Nixon.

Worthy averaged 24-25 ppg on 57% in the 87', 89', and 90' Playoffs, and was FMVP in the 1988 Playoffs.

He was #1 option on B2B champs in 87' and 88', including 30 on 62% in the 87' WCF.

The Lakers probably don't win any rings without him - they were barely beating the Celtics

If I remember correctly Nixon was traded for Scott or that pick. Might have traded Nixon for someone else. Who knows. They had Magic and were loaded with talent either way.

You're right. I never knew that.
Maybe they trade Nixon for a forward if that's what they were looking for or a scoring guard like Scott.

Are we switching Bias' death for Worthy's, meaning Bias lives? Boston 4-peats, maybe 5-peats winning 84-85-86-87-88. McHale wasn't quite the same after '87 going down slightly every year. I don't think they hold off the rise of Detroit.
