Believe it or not they can, many pro bullpen pitchers up until college were full on sluggers in HS
Mike Trout threw a no-hitter in high school, he also won a hr derby in high school batting lefty.
Once you reach NCAA/Minor league level your defensive strengths just get overshadowed by players who can throw/field better
Every outfielder, 3rd, SS and catcher has a 80-90mph cannon arm. Most can't throw it 50 times a game with precision.
Pitching is a god gifted ability imo, you can get better to only a certain extent

Exactly this. DeGrom came up as a shortstop and guess what? I don't wanna see him batting again, I don't care if he is a .300 hitter. He has hurt himself hitting. Look at Ohtani's last start against the Yankees (pitching). He got knocked out in the 1st inning and they had to pinch hit hitters at the leadoff spot whenever it came up.

Hope he can sustain it just 1 season. But he's also going to do both at the all-star game AND do the HR derby. I don't see how his body doesn't give out.

That's the thing Ohtani's a great pitching talent but we don't know how good he could be because he hasn't been able to focus on it.
Unlike you, I wasn't around during the Babe's era.
I get it that those were different times but that strikeouts to walks ratio gets you nowhere near sniffing the bigs today.
And you looked up his other pitching stats when? Oh you never did. Nor did you do any research on Babe Ruth’s ability as a pitcher. You saw one stat and formed an entire opinion around it. Way too many people do that. Yikes

Babe transitioned from a being a league average or good pitcher to a Godly hitter. I think only 1 or 2 seasons in between did he actually do both simultaneously and at that point his hitting was not where it would eventually be. And you can make a compelling argument that at no point was he simultaneously as good at both as Ohtani is right now(relative to peers). This begs the question, if Ohtani gave up one how good would he be at the other? He may be on a hot streak but he's still doing both things "part time".
Again, comparing their dominance has to be done relative to peers. There's no other way to compare guys 100 years apart. Babe became so good as a hitter that he completely changed the metagame. In that sense maybe you could argue that it's easier to be that far ahead of the competition when you're ahead of the curve.

2. when ruth hit 29 homeruns in 1919 that was more than any other teams entire roster. it was the dead ball era. it would be like ohtani hitting 300 homeruns.. and if he somehow hits 60+ like ruth did a few years later it would be like hitting 600 homeruns compared to today

They should just make Ohtani a Hitter full-time. Don't stress your body out by pitching. Bash 70 homers and bring in MVP's. If the Angels would spend money on pitching, they would finally have a good team. They are wasting the talents of guys like Ohtani, Rendon, and Trout.

That's not what SAS said. Read his exact words again:
"The fact that you got a foreign player that doesn't speak English, believe it or not, I think contributes to harming the game to some degree, when that's your box office appeal," Smith said during Monday's "First Take." "It needs to be somebody like Bryce Harper, Mike Trout, those guys. And unfortunately at this point in time, that's not the case.
The fact that he's a foreign-born player that doesn't speak English contributes to harming the game to some degree? We're not parsing words here. That's exactly what the man said. How does being foreign and not speaking the language harm the game? Explain.
The outrage is over that, not over the fact that of course if he spoke English he would more accessible. Everyone knows that.
And then there's the double-standard outrage that if a White ESPN broadcaster had said that, they'd be looking through the Classifieds right now for a new job.

In practice this isn’t true. Less speed makes the ball easier to square up and barrel. Easier to barrel means easier to hit farther.

I'll concede in that case because I think it can be interpreted both ways. I don't think he meant that literally. I think he was speaking within the context of what MLB marketing would prefer. Of course MLB would prefer had Ohtani been a white dude from Texas who is also into mumble rap and makes TikTok memes. On the other hand I do think Stephen A was a bit racist back during Linsanity.

its easier to hit it just over the fence with juiced balls and bats by juiced players. but its not easier to hit a slow pitch 480 in the dead ball era by all natural players that probly never lifted weights.
in batting practice I never hit the ball over the fence but in games I could clear it easily. its called science. the energy of the pitch transfers into the hit.
Dr. Nathan also explained during our Science of Baseball conversation that while each mph of pitch speed adds 1 ft. to the distance, each mph of bat speed adds 1.2 mph of exit speed.Jul. 23, 2015
https://diamondkinetics.com/dispelling-the-mystery-of-pitch-speed/
I can't believe you're arguing against basic science lol
I remember griffeys homerun derby shots being waaaaay shorter than his actual homeruns during games. he was all natural so he couldn't just Mcguire it 450 feet...
again. this might explain why nobody else couldnt hit homeruns during Ruth's era. the pitching had to become faster for non God like human beings to hit the ball that far. and the fences had to be moved in a bit

You just don't know how baseball is actually played :confusedshrug:
Yes, an object being struck in the exact same manner coming at you at a faster speed...will travel farther. That's not what I'm arguing. You're being obtuse for thinking that it is.
Setting the stage to help you understand:
A professional baseball hitter is facing a professional baseball pitcher. With me so far? This is not you and your unathletic 13 year old friends.
When a pitch is thrown 96 MPH, that provides a very short window for the hitter to make a decision on whether to swing or not. Because this window is so short, hitters aren't able to load up and give the most powerful swing that they can. And it's not just that pitches are fast but that they move so much too. You can't afford to commit.
Conversely, when every single pitch you see is 85 MPH and more likely to be in the strike zone (check the walk and ball/strike numbers for most pitchers back then; although I know you probably won't) that decision-making window increases. When that happens hitters can sell out earlier and give a bigger swing.
This is why...again...you see guys hit the ball farther in batting practice and in home run derby's than they do in games.
All of this is actually the largest contributor as to why home run numbers have been so drastically up the last couple of years, despite the balls. Guys are selling out sooner and living with the higher likelihood of a strikeout in exchange for the higher likelihood of a home run with the more powerful swing they're afford by said selling out.

Dude, Jesus Christ.
For starters, the longest home run that Ken Griffey ever hit (on record) was at the 1993 home run derby :lol
No one hit home runs like that in Ruth's era for 2 main reasons:
1) he was certainly the best power hitter of the era. That isn't arguable.
2) the way he swung lent itself to home runs in an era when "putting the ball in play" was the goal. It'd be like sending Steph Curry to 1982 and having him play the exact same way. He'd make more threes than most teams. Eventually guys caught on with Ruth and in the next couple years we saw more guys hit in the 30s and 40s with home runs. Though not as much as him because again...he was the strongest guy of the era. And the best hitter in general.
But he wasn't a god. He just transformed the game and was the most talented in the process.

nobody hits 700+ homeruns during a dead ball era without having insane vision, hand eye coordination and natural strength. especially when the parks are nearly 500 feet everywhere but down the line
you can try dismissing what ruth did because the pitching was slower but for that to make any sense there would need to be other examples of babe Ruth's from that era. but the fact is the next best guy was hitting like 10 homeruns

You're trying to infer all of this because I took issue with your low IQ baseball take that Babe Ruth would hit 80+ home runs a year today?
What even is your world view :lol
You boggle the mind.

if he hit 700+ and 60 in a season during an era when entire teams hit around 20.. with near 500 foot fences... balls probly wound by hand and baseball bats fashioned out of a tree trunk with imperfections after guzzling back 20 beers and smoking cigars inbetween innings and having zero medical staff or trainers to keep him in shape. then yes he likely does hit more today.
he was an anomaly. he almost wasn't human. its arguable that he may have called his own shot one time. and even at the very end of his career with a failing body he hit 3 homeruns in one game and 1 of them completely out of the stadium. something nobody ever did at forbes field. all cause he was pissed that the team reneged on a promise to make him manager

In his 60 home run season he had a teammate who hit 47.
Another guy hit 56 the following year

Another guy hit 56 the following year
and nearly a decade prior he hit 54 with no teammate getting above 11..
and a year before that he hit 29 with everyone else on the team combining for 4 during a year he was pitching every 4 games too
and yes lou gehrig was pretty good too. one might say he was another god like anomaly for his time and ruths successor
but take a look at the difference between ruth and the next best guy
had he not been pitching half the time he probly hits 50+ in 1919 as well

Keep those years going and you’ll notice a trend. Ruth’s numbers stay the same while everyone else’s go up. Why do you think that is?
It can’t be because they changed the ball or dimensions because then well...Ruth’s should go up too, no?

because ruth was ahead of his time and other guys had to catch up to him but never really came close other than gehrig whos another legend
are you saying anyone ever equaled him? lol.. no one did till roger marris came around 30 years later
and nobody matched them till the steroid boom in the 90s

Correct. That's all it is.
He's the GOAT because he was so ahead of his time and completely changed the way baseball is played. And happened to be the best of his time. Not because he was stronger than Giancarlo Stanton.
You can't compare a literal 100 year difference in a vacuum like that.

so you think after 14 years in the league when guys finally almost caught up to ruth and were hitting 40 homeruns to his 60 you thought "hey ... shouldn't ruth hit 80 then?!?! ... why didn't ruth send himself a time machine when he was actually in his prime and tell him to travel 30 years into the future when maris hit 61 and then go for 80!?!?! DEEERP"
ok so ruth only got up to 60 by age 32... then started declining from alcohol abuse. oops... guess he won't have a chance to prove he can still hit 20-30 more homeruns than the next guy in line since there is this thing called aging and decline... but 46 homeruns and leading the league at age 36 is still pretty good though huh?
especially considering they played like 10 less games every year. ruth probly sacrificed 50 homeruns over his career just due to that
