This is for those that have followed his career closely. He is an exceptionally talented offensive player with insane handles. He probably has the best mid range game or at least top 3.

But what has held him back? Why hasn't he had lots of success? I know he's a different kind of dude but what is holding him back?

he has psychosis and schizophrenia. he went off his meds after the Boston situation and he's been full on paranoid delusions ever since. lebron shouldn't have stat padded up 20 for those first 3 cavs wins in the 2016 finals and just kept riding kyrie. then he wins finals mvp like he deserved and isn't forced to go somewhere else to try and prove he's a champion all over again to be like his idol kobe and win without the other guy.

do you always make fun of the mentally ill OP?

I don't think basketball is his first priority.just a pay check to fuel his other endeavours.

Yes, but that's a fairly recent revelation. When he left Cleveland, his priority was to lead a team as "the man".

I think it’s a mental thing, something is off with him. He will actually be 30 next season, and although he is extremely talented it doesn’t seem like his career took off how it should have, too many pauses, new starts, injuries in his career. I wouldn’t be surprised if him getting injured in this years playoffs messes with him mentally.

We have to remember that an NBA championship season is 100 games. Not everyone has it in them. Kyrie is a guy who likes to float in and out, pick his spots, hit the series-winning 3 on you.

It's what keeps him from being a top 30 player of all time. Meanwhile though, it makes him an ideal #2 for a guy like Lebron or KD who does want to dominate the game that way.

Kyrie can look like Kobe for a quarter and a half. That doesn't mean he's Kobe.

Bronball negatively affects teammates in different ways. They all lose that mental edge playing with lebron.

Not having the 1st option ability to lead a team, misses too many games, and as another poster said, it seems like basketball isn't his first priority.

You mean, why can't Kyrie "What does the word government mean to you" Irving lead a team?

His hero Kobe chirping in his ear, telling him to get away from same situation he had with Shaq.

Now he's fighting "the man" from keeping him down.

People grow and change. Are you the same person you were 5 years ago. It's weird to think that way.your life outlook can change in a year in circumstances dictate.I'm not saying I'm right just offerering an opinion

Hes just not an elite passer and is also a terrible defender. Thats what happens when youre a SG in a PGs body. Hes also not a great locker room guy and often says stuff that does not help rally the troops (actually the opposite).

Cause he's a part time player

Injury. He's made of glass and/or has horrible intuition for avoiding injury. Like Stockton compared to Rose, some guys are just more in control and don't take wild risks physically to make a play.

Kyries defensive metrics have been positive. Curry and Klay had the worst series of their careers against him. He's also a very good passer as well. He just gets hurt too often but part of me thinks that's due to guys sitting out to get a bigger bag, less heart, and him personally not building himself up to be stronger physically. He seems the type to be so extraordinary skilled that he doesn't take weight lifting or conditioning seriously.

Better passer than people give him credit for, rarely turns the ball over and is an underrated defensive player. Those who actually watch him play know this bro..

He can lead a team, but he's had horrible luck with the timing of his injuries. Just because he hates the media doesn't mean that he's a bad leader, you saw how all the Celtics dapped him up after every game, despite what the media members claimed about his time in Boston. KD out of all people left a dynasty to team up with him, that does not happen if he's a terrible locker room guy and a cancer.

Don't let ESPN fool you.
