View Full Version : The NBA is shooting for a 75 billion dollar rights deal soon.

From ESPN/tnt/their Chinese distributor and maybe even fox sports who wants in.
People who know these things seem to think it’s likely they get it. The last deal was only 24 billion but streaming rights, international, online clicks, and all the little things people don’t think of other than ratings are making a 75 billion dollar ask possible and the president of ESPN said he was pleased with all the numbers and ready to make a huge deal to keep them.
Im just waiting for the news to drop and see how the “Go woke go broke” types downplay it.
Major sports leagues are pretty much untouchable at this point. Baseball still gets it done total revenue wise and I have no idea who anyone of their best players are other than maybe 4 names. And most of them I couldn’t put a face to.
The digital rights, online metrics, and international side are too much to stop. 20 million young people waking up and clicking a quick recap turns out to be worth a huge sum of money even if they didn’t watch the game.
Watch….Lukas second Supermax deal will be for 460 million dollars….. and the guys who paved the way will still die relatively poor and ignored.

Wish the NBA would get more away from ESPN. Their pre game and halftime shows suck ass. Would rather see TNT covering the Finals, but they don't have the cash to compete with Disney.

Yeah I can barely watch ESPN coverage. They have been trying to be cool and hip for 20 years not realizing that the kids they aim for will never think anything like that is cool and the old people actually watching want either serious discussion or just nice personalities having a good time. I still cringe remembering the custom rap songs of the early 2000s.

A quality streaming option probably won't exist for awhile, as the money's coming from the TV network deals. Those local broadcasters pay huge sums, because live sports is what brings in the revenue.
TV today focuses on 3 things:
- News (cheap to produce)
- Live sports (lots of viewers)
- Reality TV (cheap to produce)

You're right but TNT is going to go to shit in 2 years if Barkley keeps his word and retires. They'll still be better than ESPN though, lol.

I think what will become clear is that EJ is the key to Inside the NBA not Barkley. EJ is unbelievably good at what he does.

Ernie plays the straight man, which allows Chuck and Shaq to do what they do.
EJ = Jerry
Kenny = Elaine
Shaq = Kramer
Chuck = George
We all knew that George was the star of the show, but Jerry was what held it all together. It wouldn't have worked if it was just George, or Kramer.
Remember the Michael Richards Show?
In 2000, after the end of Seinfeld, Richards began work on a new series for NBC, his first major project since Seinfeld's finale. The Michael Richards Show, for which Richards received co-writer and co-executive producer credits, was conceived as a comedy/mystery starring Richards as a bumbling private investigator. After the first pilot failed with test audiences, NBC ordered that the show be retooled into a more conventional, office-based sitcom before its premiere. After a few weeks of poor ratings and negative reviews, it was cancelled.

He maximizes the show’s production quality, which is certainly valuable. But Barkley is still the engine IMO.
Everyone would rather listen to Barkley riff on some no-frills podcast than watch Lisa Leslie or whatever woman they replace him with try awkwardly to fill his shoes on a show with great production value.

I always read that EJ puts in the work and he's clearly a glue guy to an extent... they're both probably nearly impossible to replace but I think Barkley is even less so. I think the show falls flat without either one but Barkley is the one that everyone plays off of. Shaq and Kenny are practically nothing without Barkley's presence. EJ himself has massively benefited from Barkley's presence.

Look back to this clip of Barkley's opening broadcast. Clearly none of the three were as good then as they are now but EJ had been doing the job for what? 10+ years at that point? You can see EJ stiffening up and being uncomfortable at certain times when talking to Barkley. Hell, he even goes so far as to cross his arms when posing a question to Barkley at one point and then uncrossing his arms when Peter Vecsey starts to talk, who is unbearable btw.
Charles Barkley made that show.

And if he tried to make it with the lames ESPN had the last 20 years it wouldn’t have worked. EJ makes everything he does around there click. I can barely even watch nba open court episodes without him. They have some other guy do some and it’s just boring as hell. Kenny and Shaq could be anyone without a stick up their asses. EJ and Chuck matter. And I think EJ could play off say….Webber or Gary Payton….better than Charles with whoever they find. The show would work I guess….but it wouldn’t be what it is.

Hell EJ has been doing it forever too. They all might as well go out together. Imagine the money EJ and Kenny get if they go to tnt and say they’re retiring with Charles unless they pay up.

You're probably right in that EJ and Chuck matter. They're probably on equal ground I guess, but I definitely am not giving the nod the EJ. No way.

Speaking of Shawn Marion, that’s pretty much how I see Kenny’s presence on the show. He doesnt get the headlines but he’s quietly above replacement value. Has a great humor rapport with Charles and often bridges the gap when Chuck and Ernie arent on the same page. Also brings legitimate basketball insight. I think people think hes replaceable simply because hes not an outspoken lightning rod, but hes low key a much better fit on the show than a lot of anaylists you could try to replace him with

He sets Chuck and Shaq up all the time, then plays the voice of reason, just like Ernie does.

Any time Barkley goes on a wild tangent (especially about another player), Kenny tightens up like he is extremely uncomfortable and wants to leave the room. It's beyond being just a straight man, he's legitimately terrified of cracking a joke at the expense of another player. He'll sit mute, arms crossed and despondent. He certainly has some moments, and I agree probably sets up more of those than anyone you could replace him with, but I'd like to see him push a boundary or two once in a while.
His insight though...his constant unnecessary and long-winded analogies are a tough listen.

If you go woke, you do indeed go broke. Look at Gillette. Look at the NBA this season without politicial messages on the court.

It's because Shaq and Barkley are just having fun while Kenny's angling for a job in the industry. He's careful what he says and how he comes across.

"Go woke go broke" is the dumbest thing I've ever heard. If you DONT go woke, you go broke. It's why the bigger the corporation or the more money's involved, the more woke they get. The more worried about appeasing everyone and being middle of the road they get. It's how it's always been. Dunno what kind of idiot thinks it works any other way.

Ehh. Going woke itself is not a revenue generator. People who like basketball watch Inside the NBA despite a lack of adversity. People who like chess will watch chess broadcasts regardless of diversity (diversity is actually making them less watchable). A quality product sells itself. If you tamper with it by going woke, youre taking an unnecessary risk in public satisfaction with the product.
What this is really about is the fact that the richest 1% are still white males, and it’s becoming harder to keep that narrative out of the headlines. Especially as the lower end workforce becomes more diverse. And as mega corporations are poised to take greater and greater control of developing ethnic nations. Going woke is a pre-emptive PR thing against accusations of corporate imperialism, not a “more appealing product” thing. They cant avoid the race narrative, so theyre making sure they control it on their terms. Convincing the public to blame scapegoats like Trump/rednecks, instead of the people actually profitting (themselves).
BLM and all that nonsense are corporate constructions used to justify billionaire machinations. But the everyday idiots who are conditioned to shriek and writhe whenever the mainstream media rings the bell, and believe theyre actually opposing the establishment... just lol.
