View Full Version : What's more prestigious, Olympic Gold or NBA Ring?

In your opinion, which would you rather have, an Olympic Gold Medal in basketball or an NBA ring? I spent the whole day watching the 8 game from Barcelona and Magic Johnson stated that winning the gold was the biggest moment in his life. This coming from a guy that's won 5 NBA titles.
I'm going to say winning gold is more prestigious. To those who say the NBA ring is better, I ask you, how many less players have gold medals than players with NBA championships? There's much fewer.

I wouldn’t trade a 2 season run as a 10th man in the nba for a gold medal. I wouldn’t even need the title. I cant prove anything to anyone on a team with 9 hall of famers. It would just be about the fun of the trip and the stories you could tell. The medal itself would make for good conversation I guess but….eh.
And it’s not like people will even remember I won it. I have a decent idea who was on the 2000 Olympic team but I’m not 100%. And I remember such things way better than most random Americans.
Nobody would know you from being one of 12 Olympic winners. People still taking about John Paxon.
When the 2000 dream team beat the Lithuanian team by a single jumper…..
Who scored their final basket to give them that final lead?
I don’t remember and you don’t know either. I just remember Lithuania miss and Vince Carter doing a “It’s over” motion. I don’t even know who gave us the lead. Those aren’t moments that get remembered.
Its not that big a deal. The expectation is too high to get credit for it.
Now as a non American?
I’d understand Manu not giving up 04 for an extra nba ring. As the underdog…..ok. That’s a discussion.

The ring is more prestigious. Unless you're from somewhere like Uzbekistan...then you'd probably value the olympic gold more.

If you're playing for team USA, the NBA ring is more prestigious. Otherwise, it's the Olympic gold.
Also, if you're playing for team USA, losing an Olympic gold is worse than losing an NBA championship.
Them's the rules.

Id imagine if Tim could change 2013 or the 2004 olympics he takes that ring. That game 6 and 7 has to stay with you.

The correct answer is: Whichever one Lebron has won most recently.

One is a narrow loss. The other was a debacle. A narrow loss that slipped out of your hands is something people often dwell on and have regrets. Whereas I'm sure he's blocked the entire 2004 Olympics from his head.

This thread is not a knock on anyone, I've always wondered this question. Magic Johnson said the gold medal was bigger than any one of his NBA championships.
How many players have gold medals, how many have NBA championships? I think there are significantly more players with NBA rings than gold medals making the gold medal harder to come by. In my opinion, I'd rather have the gold medal.

Isnt that because there are less opportunities to win gold and its a lot of the same best players that go though... lol

When anyone compares players it's MJ had these stats 5 mvp's 10 scoring titles 6 fmvps, Lebron is a 4 time fmvp with these stats, Kobe is a 5 time champ and 2x fmvp with these stats. And the stats in question are always nba stats.

Globally the gold is more prestigious. Here in the states an NBA chip is more prestigious.

For American nba players I still say it’s an nba ring no matter what magic says. But Doncic said recently that winning the gold with Slovenia would mean more to him than an nba ring. I think that’s mostly true for European players, to be able to upset and win on the international stage. For Americans I think it’s the novelty of winning an Olympic gold medal that’s most appealing.

Christian Laettner in 1992 was more well known nationally than some of the dream team.

Gold Medal. In international play, the refs actually call the games fairly and travels, carries and offensive fouls are always called when they occur.
Because they actually enforce basketball rules players like Giannis and LeBron get exposed in international play. The disparity and drop off in their games between NBA and international play is obvious to basketball purists who desire integrity within the sport and puzzling to basketball casuals who value the stat sheet and cheap Superteam rings.

Gold Medal for anyone that isn't Team USA. Context is key though. They went through a drought from 2002-2006, while sending some of their best talent. Winning gold in 2008 was a big deal for Redeem Team. Easily one of, if not their most COVETED medal. USA would need to lose more for the value to rise again.

That's only because of injury to literally every team the Suns have faced. And they are doing their damnest to let Gianniss win. See tonight.

Nah a nba ring is way better because it's way harder to get. Winning a gold on the us team is like taking candy from a baby or at least it should be

Depends on the team, winning for Argentina or Slovenia is a lot different than winning for USA. I'd argue for those guys it would be more prestigious especially if it involved beating Team USA at its best, otherwise winning the NBA championship is more prestigious for most NBA players

Of course NBA title is more prestigious. Americans have the mentality of "we can steamroll these guys in the olympics with our B team", there's really not a huge pride in winning it. Besides, you only win 1 gold while Simone Biles winning 5 golds or something.

Magic already had his five rings in his pocket when he won the gold medal in '92. It makes sense that the gold medal was the next big challenge in his career, and thus would be more memorable when he finally achieved it. Ask some of his fellow Dreamers... Barkley, Malone, Stockton... if they'd rather have a ring or a gold medal, and their answers might be different. Let's be honest, when we think of Malones basketball career, the first thing that comes to mind is not that gold medal in '92.

Also, for people not playing in the NBA or watch the NBA (which is the vast majority of human being), they will never get or value an NBA ring. So by default Olympic gold is considered by the vast majority more prestigious.

Olympic Gold.
