Reporters often ask mundane, stupid and or repetitive questions, but it's pretty clear that he's just lost perspective somewhere along the way. Maybe that's how he always was, idk. There are literally billions of people that would happily answer stupid questions if it were part of a gig of making millions a year to be around sports. I don't want to oversimplify what he brings to the table, but it's pretty clear he lost perspective long ago.

Much worse is the constant end of quarter interview charade he puts on.

Why is that hard to comprehend? Pop is in the right. The reporter asked him a question and tried to correct him before he can give his full statement. That lacks professional courtesy. Just admit you misunderstood and move on.

the nerdy reporter was cutting off Popovich while Popovich was responding - that's rude and bitch-made but not surprising from some nerd trying to compensate for being a no-nothing nerd
Popovich was 100% correct - the 2016 team won by 3 points in 2 different games, and then finished 7th in 2019.. They also lost 7 times in the 2004 and 2006 games..
So this idea that the US always steamrolls everyone is wrong - it's typical over-generalization by the dumb media, who operates and thinks on a junior-high level.. You have to be an immature person to be a sports reporter, because it's your job to look for something salacious

Part of the head coaching job is doing PR for your locker room. I don’t think you or most nba fans appreciate that head coaches have to be well spoken and make excuses for their team night in and night out for the media.

Pop is a dick for in-game interviews - that's true - but let's not conflate that with what happened here - the reporter was trying to play gotcha and say: "the US blows everyone out, but you can't even beat Nigeria"
Pop wasn't having it and politely pointed out that the US hasn't been blowing everyone away for some time and every year has seen numerous close games or losses

The 2008 and 2016 team won the gold medal game by single digits. Your point is irrelevant. Team USA on average beats most international teams handily. Just like the numbers indicate. Pop was grandstanding and couldn't handle that the reporter caught his ass in a lie. He was feeling the heat.

The reporter was wrong by pretending the USA doesn't have close games or losses - every year there's several close games, or even losses in 04', 06', and 19'... Team USA has routinely has close games, so a couple close games or losses are overblown, even if it's exhibition.. infact, ESPECIALLY if it's exhibition
It's all entertainment, and it's fun to talk about how the USA is losing it's grip on the basketball world.. But it's another thing to play gotcha with Popovich by pretending that the US never struggled or lost before.

The reporter doesn't say that at all. Listen to the clip again. He said that in SOME of the tournaments, USA blew these teams out. Which is true. The last 2 Olympics, USA beat the brakes off Nigeria and beat Australia by double-digits. Exhibition or not, that's the truth here.
Nobody disputes that international comp has gotten better. Or that USA never has close games. Again, the gold medal games were TIGHT in both 2008 and 2012.

He played gotcha with Pop and then proved his immaturity and underhandedness by interrupting Popovich like an angry girlfriend.
So his conduct revealed his intentions, while Popovich remained calm and waited for the hyper douche bag finish his political speech (his attempt to present evidence that Pop is bad)
But he was wrong - close games and losses are NOT uncommon for Team USA, so the reporter shouldn't have tried to put it on Popovich, or taken that approach.. but again, reporters are stuffy, journalism majors that became journalists to play "gotcha", so it requires a certain immaturity.

The reporter is bold-faced lying - Team USA faces close games or losses every year - it isn't unusual and the reporter should've known that.. But again, reporters are paid to play gotcha, so it requires a certain immaturity and being a child in your own mind to do the job, hence the reporter acting like an angry girlfriend cutting Popovich off.

Who cares - that's a bad question because the performance against teams from 5, 10 and 15 years ago is irrelevant.. For example, the USA lost to Puerto Rico and Greece 15 years ago, but that's not relevant today.
So the reporter asked a dumb question to play GOTCHA, because that's what the media does - they aren't interested in good reporting - he tried to conflate wins against a few teams to say the US doesn't have close games or lose in general, which is false.. Fortunately, Popovich set him straight and exposed him in the process, so it's all good.

You're missing the point. The goal is to win gold, which makes it even more relevant. Popovich doesn't speak for Dame either - but by doing so, he stuck his foot in his mouth. Just like all Karens do.

We lost in 2004. Lost in 2006. In 2008, won by a hair vs Spain. There's been a bunch of years where everything wasn't a blowout. I don't see this as Pops fault. You can't teach an old dog new tricks.
You can't teach all these soft iso ballers to play as a team. Their 200 million dollar contract egos are too big.

here's Broussard talking about how Team USA is employing the predictable high-screen roll and it's getting exposed - the 1 or 2-man game that the US has learned is getting beat by the 5 man game that the international players learned:

“I always go back to (John) Stockton and (Karl) Malone,” coach Gregg Popovich said. “Jerry (Sloan) ran the same play for 20 years, they just ran it really well, and that’s what we want to do. We want to play defense a certain way, offense very simply, but still taking advantage of everybody’s abilities. “It was better,” Popovich also said. “Bit by bit, every day I hope.” (https://theathletic.com/2705863/2021/07/13/team-usa-basketball-olympics-argentina/?source=rss)
