View Full Version : Why are the finals ratings a lot better this year than last?

you would think with everyone stuck at home last year that the rating would have been better.

guess no one wanted to watch Lebald play in a mickey mouse finals against the lowly Heat.

that's not it. we loved watching him fail regardless of his collusions. what we don't like is him villifying an entire race, all police and all Republicans while standing with China, thieves, rioters and other criminals that get what they deserve for breaking the law just because hes black and blacks can do no wrong.. lebron should have gotten the donald sterling treatment by now but like I just said. blacks can do no wrong. they can be openly racist without repercussion

Regular season NFL > NBA Championship match?

For one thing Lebron was healthy in last year’s finals and had a halfway competent supporting cast, so it was absolutely certain he would win. There was no suspense. We knew LeChampion would close the deal. All there was to do as a fan was tune into the trophy ceremony at the end.

Whereas this year’s finals is more balanced, because neither team has a LeGOAT James to rely on. So people tune in to find out who’s going to end up winning game by game.

Regular season NFL > NBA Championship match?

I don't think you realize how big the NFL is in this country, 15-17 million people watch regular season games every week, not including illegal streams.

I know its by far number 1, but I wouldn't think a random regular season week could crater NBA championship matches. Guess it can.

For what it's worth, Sunday night football on NBC averages 17 million viewers each week, so more people have watched regular season football than the last 3 nba finals, (2019-2021).

The last time the NBA averaged 20 million viewers in the Finals was 2017, which of course featured LeBron. As a matter of fact those Warriors-Cavs Finals had more people watching than any Finals in the last 20 years.

the ratings were a good indication to let you know it didn't count. no one cared.

2019 finals had an entire nation (Canada) tuning in to support their 1 team.

there was only a 15% difference between 2018 and 2019. no excuse needed.

on the other hand, here is some data for the history of nba finals:

Lowest rated
2020 Game 3 – 3.1
2020 Game 2 – 3.6
2020 Game 1 – 4.1

Least watched
2020 Game 3 – 5.94 million
2020 Game 2 – 6.61 million
2020 Game 1 – 7.41 million

Why did Steph in the Finals in 2019 only have 15 million viewers compared to 17.5 million in 2018? Hmm, wonder what happened.

Matchups. Toronto will not generate much interest. KD was injured.

But a team from Cleveland somehow did? How did a small market Cleveland team in 2018 with LeBron and nobody else gather higher ratings than the more stacked Raptors team and a Curry led team?

We already know KD wasn't a factor ratings wise, as evident by the 2015 & 2016 high ratings.

It's pretty damn obvious too, fact is every sport except the NFL suffered massive ratings loss in 2020, lets not forget that those Warriors-Cavs Finals ratings were off the charts, everyone was glued to their TV for those Finals.

Hell, just look at this forum, it's all LeBron topics, but the trolls here will try to have you think "Nobody cares about Bron". LMAO.

2016 NBA Finals game 7 audience tops 30 million, biggest in 18 years

The Cleveland Cavaliers thrilling 93-89 win over the Golden State Warriors brought in 30.8 million viewers on Sunday night, the network said.

The telecast peaked with 44.5 million viewers from 10:30 pm to 10:40 pm ET when the Cavaliers wrapped up the victory.

This makes the much anticipated showdown the most watched NBA game since 1998 when Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls beat the Utah Jazz.

The seven game series averaged 20.1 million viewers for ABC making it the most-watched NBA Finals since 1998.

Come on bruh. It clearly had alot to do with steph and the warriors and then in 17 kd joining them. Bron had a part in that also and the rivalry also played a role. U can't put all or even most of the credit to bron. It was alot of factors that led to those ratings

and it really doesn't make any sense that this year's finals is out performing last year's. we have 2 small market teams in states that, together, are about the population of Pennsylvania and less than half of California.

you would think last year's finals, which included teams from the largest and 3rd largest states, would have done better. but i guess have Butler as the biggest star in the finals will do that.

also, no one wants to see LeTravel and his ugly ass game

This is the most I have followed the playoffs since the Bulls went back to sucking. This year is like 90's NBA Jam: every team has their guy and legit star to ride with but any team could win it all. When it is wide open like that, it makes watching the games actually interesting.

Modern basketball is a snooze fest yet viewers keep growing. It might not make sense but Lebron is still the biggest draw in the NBA.

He remains the league's cash cow these days. And people have more access now than ever because of social media too.
