Probably wasn't environmentally tenable to continue cross-continental airline travel at the rate it was growing, given the sheer number of people emerging into "development" worldwide.

The Earth is at a cross roads in terms of population and energy consumption. That is primarily what Covid is all about. Justifying the sheer scale of overhaul needed to accommodate humanity's future existence without utterly destroying the Earth.
