Even more overrated than Karl Malone. Dude doesn’t catch near the heat he should despite him being the perfect specimen to rule the 90’s

He's underrated if anything. He almost never gets talked about.

He was a great player. It's not a crime to be outplayed by Olajuwon and Shaq.

Least respected player though
No one besides the spurs organization really acknowledges him...
prob has to do with him not giving shaq an autograph and later being force fed 70 to get the scoring crown... lots of coaches and players lost respect for him that game.

He's rated appropriately by most in my opinion...well maybe he is a little overrated. I think he belongs in the top 40-50 players of all time.
Had a nice peak/prime but underperformed in the playoffs.

Didn't Shaq admit he made that story up?

Didn't Shaq admit he made that story up?
So he says... but I doubt it. He's mentioned it multiple times throughout his career.
I mean he used it as motivation to crush him. What kind of psycho can make shit up just to use it against someone for some psychological advantage?

IDK anyone that overrates the Admiral. In fact, yes he is never talked about. And he’s basically the most freakish athlete to ever play the position.
Player efficiency rating
1) MJ 27.19
2) LeBron 27.39
3) AD 27.10
4) Shaq 26.43
5) D-Rob 26.18
Def underrated all time. Slept on.

DRob, at WORST, is a top 25 player all time. To me, he is closer to top 20 but KD and Curry probably passed him by but he's still closer to 20 or in the teens. He was probably the most well coordinated 7 footer ever. Hakeem was smoother and D. Howard was more explosive but DRob had that perfect blend.

Fell off a bit in the playoffs, but Dave still had 2-way impact. HIGH IMPACT. He and MJ are the only players to win a scoring title and DPOY in the same season. Robinson and AD are similar players imo. Face up bigs with elite advanced stats. Dave was definitely better on defense, but AD is no slouch there.

Someone post Robinson head to head vs Hakeem, Ewing, Shaq, Zo in the regular season. We know how they did in the playoffs vs each other. Their reg season stats would be nice.

Better than KG to put things in perspective.
Outplayed Hakeem for most of their careers prior to that infamous series. That series changed both of their outlooks by fans/analysts. It was always generally leaning towards Robinson prior to that.
MVP, DPOY, All NBA first four times, countless all defensive teams, etc. 2 time champ.
What is overrated? He is top 25 easy.

He’s the best player to ever wear a San Antonio Spurs jersey.
He would have better accumulative stats if he didn’t selflessly serve our great country in the Navy, and come into the league a little bit later than he probably should have.
He didn’t play for a Hall of Fame coach like Gregg Popovich for a significant chunk of his career, or in his prime. The best player he played with, was an often injured, Sean Elliott.
Not Tony Parker, a guy who could win finals MVP. Not a Manu Ginóbili, a perennial six man of the year, and one of the greatest international players of all time. Like Duncan.
He didn’t play with a prime / peak Dwyane Wade, a top five shooting guard ever. Like Shaq.
He didn’t play with a Clyde Drexler, a top-five shooting guard ever. Like Hakeem.
Hell, he didn’t even play with a great all-around cast akin to Kenny Smith, Vernon Maxwell, Otis Thorpe, Sam Cassell, and Robert Horry. Like Hakeem.
He didn’t play with a prime Kobe Bryant, the second greatest shooting guard of all time. Like Shaq.
He didn’t play with a prime Magic Johnson, the best PG ever and a top five player ever and James Worthy. Like Kareem.
He didn’t play with an Oscar Robertson, a top 15 player ever. Like Kareem.
He didn’t play with Jerry West, a top five shooting guard ever, and Elgin Baylor, a top five small forward ever. Like Wilt.
He didn’t play with LeBron James, a top-five player ever. In a Mickey Mouse bubble championship where no one cared. Like Anthony Davis.
He’s underrated as hell.
Regardless if he got outplayed and put on skates by Hakeem head to head in the playoffs. Because it’s not as significant as you remember, beyond some sick Hakeem highlights. To be honest, Hakeem actually outplayed Patrick Ewing and young Shaquille Oneal by a greater margin. So Hakeem did that to everyone in those two seasons.

Lol no. David Robinson is one of the most dominant floor raisers ever. 56 wins from 21 his rookie season and then look how they fell off in 97 when he was injured all season. They went from 59 wins to 21. They went from 9th in offense to 27th and 3rd in defense to dead last. Overrated is the last thing David Robinson was with the way he carried the Spurs. Few superstars have had his impact.

Real GM had him at 18th I believe. High IQ fans know18 does seem a bit high for me, but I have noticed a lot of times people disagree on criteria moreso than the ability of a player. If their criteria is peak heavy I can see Robinson being higher than I would normally rank him.

People love PER. Particular modern dork fans who never played. The ONLY players career wise ranked above him using that tool is MJ, LeBron, AD, and Shaq. Let that sink in.

Exactly.
American sports is riddled at times by narrative over reality. David Robinson came up short at times when others went on to accomplish amazing things. It happens. All athletes falter. For Robinson, it just happened to be in high profile situations which then skewed public perception of him. To win a title you need a bit of luck, and at times it is circumstantial. Robinson was consistent as an athlete and player, which is the best measure of greatness.

What we've forgotten is that Admiral, prior to 94, was probably viewed as a bit ahead of Hakeem. That 94 and 95 run( especially the 95 playoffs) has had us evangelizing Hakeem to the degree of us forgetting that he had plenty of playoff futility prior to that and was seen as a malcontent around 92. There was a a point when Robinson was considered the future of the league, before the Bulls ran off all those chips, before Shaq came in, before Hakeem had that 2-3 year run. IIRC he was routinely winning the IBM award as the best across tje board statistical player. That was probably akin to the 'PER award' if that was a thing nowadays. His level of play didn't rise in the playoffs, Hakeem ate his lunch in 95, and he eventually let Duncan take over and play second fiddle to his first chip. That's sort of made him a forgotten star but he was absolutely huge in the early/mid 90s as far as impact, stardom and status in the league.
