Maria Taylor officially leaves ESPN, is reportedly “close” to a deal with NBC and could join their Olympic coverage (msn.com) (https://www.msn.com/en-us/sports/other/maria-taylor-officially-leaves-espn-is-reportedly-close-to-a-deal-with-nbc-and-could-join-their-olympic-coverage/ar-AAMpbd8?ocid=winp1taskbar)

After a lot of discussion over Maria Taylor’s future at ESPN following reports of them offering her much less than they did in 2020, talk around Rachel Nichols’ comments about Taylor being promoted into the NBA Countdown Finals role Nichols had previously been announced in and the internal strife Nichols’ comments led to at ESPN, and reporting on Taylor being at “the half-yard line” on signing a deal with NBC, Taylor has now officially moved on. She previously signed an agreement to stay with ESPN through the end of the NBA Finals, despite that being past her contract’s expiration if the series went seven games. But with those Finals wrapping up Tuesday with the Milwaukee Bucks’ Game 6 win, ESPN and Taylor “jointly announced” their parting of ways Wednesday:

Here are those comments (https://espnpressroom.com/us/press-releases/2021/07/statements-from-espn-and-maria-taylor/):

Comment from Jimmy Pitaro, Chairman, ESPN and Sports Content
“Maria’s remarkable success speaks directly to her abilities and work ethic. There is no doubt we will miss Maria, but we remain determined to continue to build a deep and skilled talent roster that thoroughly reflects the athletes we cover and the fans we serve. While she chose to pursue a new opportunity, we are proud of the work we’ve done together.”
Comment from Maria Taylor:
“So thankful to Jimmy and all of my great teammates and friends at the SEC Network, College GameDay, Women’s and Men’s college basketball, and the NBA Countdown family — the people who believed in me, encouraged me, pushed me, and lifted me up. Words are inadequate to express my boundless appreciation, and I hope to make them proud.”
It looks like Taylor’s next stop is likely to be NBC. Nothing there has been officially announced yet, but Kevin Draper of The New York Times wrote that (https://www.nytimes.com/2021/07/21/sports/basketball/maria-taylor-espn.html) “she is close to signing an agreement with NBC, according to two people familiar with the negotiations who were not authorized to speak about them publicly,” and Andrew Marchand of The New York Post wrote that (https://nypost.com/2021/07/21/maria-taylor-quickly-heads-to-nbc-after-espn-drama/) “While several sources said Taylor is headed to NBC, nothing is official yet.” Marchand added that “For NBC, if a contract is completed, Taylor is expected to be part of its forthcoming Olympic coverage that begins in earnest on Friday.” So while that isn’t fully settled yet, if it gets done, we could see Taylor on the airwaves again quite soon.

How stupid does Rachel Nichols feel now? All she had to do was keep her mouth shut and wait for Taylor to leave.

Taylor clearly was planning to leave all along. She wouldn't have turned down $5 million/yr unless she intended to leave.

I agree with you it shouldnt bother anyone, if she can get paid then good for her.

I think what inherently rankles all of us as people sometimes is the idea that someones getting all this money to do nothing anyone cares about. Which means the networks see empty tripe as profitable content.

Which theyre correct about, BECAUSE most of the people who complain still do/use whatever is they complain about anyway. People complaining about the bubble as woke BLM propaganda, but still watched. Grown men crying that Disney Star Wars Transformers is too agenda driven, yet they still pay money to go see it. People talking about what trash the ESPN pre game, halftime, post game is... and they still watch!

You can set your watch by the public, and thats exactly what big companies do. That is their business model.

I never heard of this chick before all of this. Stephen A, loud mouth and all, is one of the pillars of ESPN daily sports talk. WTF does she think she's deserving of anything close to that?

Same. I had never heard this woman’s name before this contrived controversy, so it’s surprising she would be getting paid the kind of money stephen a smith is, whom everyone has heard of. It doesnt make financial sense, because you could probably find an equally capable woman to do exactly what she does for much less.

But I think the other thing you have to factor in is big corporations are mindful to pay women equally now, even if industry metrics show theyre not equally valuable in the particular role. So if Stephen A can command 5 million in salary, it probably means you also gotta pay a woman correspondent five million in salary no matter what kind of clout she carries :lol

Thats just the world we live in now.

shes capitalizing off her fame for being a black person involved in a racism scandal. basically validating rachel nichols allegations that black people get promotions because they're black

instead of her taking the job she was offered she instead used the new platform she was on to demand 5 million dollars. and she wouldn't have gotten that platform if not for being black

its just one big hypocrisy. rachel was 100% correct about her and todays society

Yeah. In a way it would be like the WNBA players trying to get NBA player money when they don't draw anywhere close to the same ratings. It's a 'me too' culture of I wanna get paid regardless of what value is actually being produced. And there are surely metrics that justify Stephen A. getting whatever he gets. This women sure as hell can't say the same, but that doesn't stop her from demanding some arbitrarily high number beyond whatever the metrics say is actually warranted, because 'reasons'.

She wanted Stephen A money to host NBA Countdown? LOL.

I might find him horrible to listen to, but Stephen A. gets that money because he's the pillar of the network and he appears on every other bloody show they run.

I didn't know this broad hosted Countdown until this story appeared and the reason for that is because if a game I want to watch is on ESPN or ABC, I literally don't flip to the channel until the game tips off because the pregame is worthless.

Not exactly. She does other things besides the NBA. She does college football and obviously the WNBA. Not saying she is worth $5 million or whatever but her worth isn't determined solely by her NBA gig.

Why do I care about her? I don't give one shit about her. I didn't know she existed before all of this contracting bullshit.

The reason I made this thread is to showcase the problem with equal pay culture. It's a problem not just at ESPN but everyones workplace. People should get paid what they bring to the table, not elevated because their a certain race, gender etc.

Maria Taylor's situation is pretty funny. ESPN prob. gave her a better contract than most would at 5M, but the fact that she thought she was worth 8M or whatever Stephen A is making is laughable.

She might make more at NBC, where she's rumored to move though.

1. Why would Nichols feel stupid? Just b/c she wasn't chosen to be the sideline reporter for the finals? I don't even understand the appeal, seems like a demotion from studio host to me.

2. You realize Nichols said that like a year ago? I'm sure she wasn't even thinking about Taylor's contract.
