View Full Version : The mentality of CP3 is a strange one

He's not lackadaisical like Harden is, where it makes sense that he fades in and out of games, but there's this certain inhibition that stops him from playing to win. He's content with having the appearance that he wants to win, rather than actually trying to win. What makes it worse is, he's well aware of this because it's the reason he shamelessly tries to pad his stats at the end when the game is essentially over.

I don't understand him really myself either
he has a butter jump shot that he doesn't really like to use. It's like he could give a crap about being assertive... or he mentally just doesn't have it to wanna take over games. You see that desire to want to dominate down the stretch by the greats, I saw it a lot with young D wade where they refused to lose come the 4th quarter. I just don't see it with cp3, and it seemingly has nothing to do with his actual physical game. Like he is top 3 all time ball handler, he has a money mid range, he was shooting like 41% from 3 I believe at his peak from that distance, and he just shot something crazy like 93% from the free throw line this year too. He has elite vision, gets more rebounds than he should, is damn near GOAT status at getting steals......
so what gives? It has to be mentality.

Doesn’t have the killer mentality. Not a shark, more of a dolphin.

this is just a crack of shit.
CP3 is one of the all time PG of the history of the league (top 5 in my book)
PG's have never won a chip unless you want to include Magic Johnson - and quite frankly he was a twinner as a SF / PG at 6'8".
Some of the best PG's have never smelled a chip , and if they won a chip it was because of a SF or a 4 or 5.
CP3 is a super smart player most of you name sayers don't understand the game.
Game 6 he scored more because Jrue Holiday was playing Booker... I did not understand why Coach Bud did this and thought he was risking a win.
Booker did not have a big game because of this , but remember 95% of PG's are not supposed to be top scores , they are supposed to be distributors.
Curry's argument - he is the top scorer... yea but Curry most of the time is not the distributor , but Green is... so Curry is more of a SG/PG cause he brings the ball up.
Iverson was in ONE finals as PG and high scorer of the 6'ers... but he never won anything.
HOF as he is so will CP3 be in the hall.
(switch CP3 with Holiday , do you think the Bucks would of won a chip ?)
I would say CP3 would of made it easier for the Bucks.

CP3 averaged 16 in the regular season. He averaged 22 in the finals (against a strong defensive team). How many guys in league history have increased their scoring by over a third and still been accused of being too passive in the finals?

Do people watch basketball? Curry 100% is the main playmaker of the team. The reason Green has the ball as much as he does is because
1. Curry is the goat off the ball player that creates as much off the ball as other do on ball
2. Green is currently one of the worst shooters/scorers in the entire league that's a starter. If he's not playmaking, the only useful thing he offers to a team is setting screens. Makes sense to optimize 1 of the players strengths and to ensure another is not completely useless at the other side of the court.

Did you watch? He obviously wasn't trying to score in the regular season. That's not even worth discussing.
He's hammering jumpers in dudes faces all playoffs (including Giannis) and when it matters he looks passive. No one can stop him from getting something that he can hit the midrange area, yet he didn't utilize it when he really needed to.
It's not always about averages.

He does not have the separation to hit those shots when the defense is keyed in on him. Especially late in games with dead legs. This has been true for years now with him. That's all there is to it. Has nothing to do with mentality.

First of all he scored 9 of the Suns 21 points in the 4th quarter on game 6. The only player in the game who scored more in the 4th was Giannis with 13.
Secondly Paul was being guarded by Holiday who is 1st team All-NBA defense and has a big size advantage on Paul. Do people really expect 36 year old Paul to drop 30+ on Holiday?

Its his size.
He's small and gives up 40 lbs to someone like Wade and isn't as fast as Wade.
Athletically can't dominate every night.

didn't you have a last second shot coming up and during the time out coach asks "who wants to take the final shot"
and a teammate immediately volunteered
and coach said "anyone else?"

This. He’s tiny (for NBA standards) and unathletic for his position to boot (although he was athletic once)

Sure he does. I just think he gets lazy and/or less aggressive when people really press him.

He passed up a last second shot last year against the Rockets in game 7... to Lu Dort. I'm not saying it wasn't the right move since Dort was killin it, but he's the leader it should be his shot. He passed it away twice. Pretty sure Rockets traded him away because he couldn't get past Kevan Looney the year before. And then he came in great shape to OKC and proved everyone wrong. Age gets the best of us, he's not young. Tired legs, especially at the end of games sucks.

Not having legs at the last posession is no excuse, you are supposed to pace yourself. It's not easy but ultimately this is what you want to achieve as a player.

It all affects separation. Length + quickness + release + elevation. He's not capable of it as the focal point of a defense and hasn't been for years. If his man is helping out then he's smart enough to find his spots. Otherwise forget about it.
Sure he does. I just think he gets lazy and/or less aggressive when people really press him.

Cp3 was actually scoring or creating for others pretty easily in game 5 and 6 when he actually tried to. The problem I had with him is that he wasn't trying to nearly as much as he should have. He honestly could have popped off in both of those games and had his own legendary Finals moments. He had open looks, favorable matchups, clear lanes and other opportunities that he passed up for seemingly no reason and just handed the ball off to others instead of at least trying to create an open look for them. THAT'S the part I don't understand. He was way more aggressive in reading what the defense was giving him and trying to take advantage more consistently in previous 2 series ever since his shoulder healed(not to mention all regular season).
