A new social justice angle to rack up sympathy points.

It's weird because she's already won 5 gold medals and is the clear GOAT when it comes to what she can do compared to others. There are moves only she can do that are literally named after her..
Still sucks that she didn't go today (I think she'll probably compete in the individuals but who knows). But the gymnasts in the 80s, 90s, or whatever didn't have thousands of people DMing them on how they're a loser if the don't stick a vault land perfectly. So it's not really fair to compare across generations.

The pressure has always been monumental at the olympics, way before social media, social media hasn’t enhanced it. It is another distraction though. Many athletes can’t handle it and should delete all social media.

Of course there has always been an enormous weight on anyone's shoulders when it comes to competing in the Olympic games, particular with the primary events.
Social media hasn't enhanced the pressure but it has enhanced the exposure. Before, if you choked people would curse you. Now people can and do literally curse at you.
You can say "aw, well just don't use social media then". Is this feasible though? It's entrenched in our society and I'm not sure what there is to be done about that. Even if Simone Biles were to stop using social media...her friends and family still do. Everything is still connected.
It's a different world and of course I don't think it's for the best. But blaming on a generation and not the actual root issue is lazy.

I'm not sure this is true actually. Failure would have been reported back then with some measure of basic decency in nightly news broadcasts, and only a couple times at 6 and 11 o'clock. I suspect it was easier to convince one's self that people out of sight and out of mind werent rampantly clowning and gossiping a performer's failure. There was more mental distance.
Back then you'd never have interaction with 99.99% of people watching anyway, bc you couldn't physically encounter that many people. Nor would they all encounter each other. In today's world creeps on reddit discuss your muscular legs publicly and how they look in a leotard, and what they wanna do about it, and it's seen by your friends at school who are having twitter convos about it with your adult neighbors, who are emailing your drivers ed instructor, who @'s your church priest. Memes about your failure, closeups of your vajayjay, twitter spam about the way you stuttered in an interview. Everyone is participating interactively in your humiliation.
I think it's absolutely a different landscape mentally. Much harder to compartmentalize things for anyone in the public eye, ESPECIALLY teenage girls at the peak of their hormones and shit. Every pixel of every part of you was not in people's faces back then the way it is now. If you screwed up the news would cover it for a minute, but people couldn't pull it on their phone six months later and play it in front of you while you sit on a park bench. It's rough out their for real these days.
Ofc the irony for me is, I feel exceptionally equipped to handle that kinda stuff... and I can't get ****in famous :yaohappy:

You do raise some good points. However, how I see it is that the number 1 athletes have always been under 10 out of 10 pressure in the Olympics. The Olympics 30 years ago wasn’t less cutthroat competitive than it is now. The stakes have always been huge. As big as they are gonna get.
In my opinion the fact of failing in front of your competition and peers has always heavily outranked what idiots from the peanut gallery have to say about it, in terms of mental anguish that is.

Yeah but I don't think it's fear of athletic failure that has these kids rattled now. You're right that's been the primary pressure historically, and something anyone pursuing athletic greatness has had to deal with. But the main focus of news coverage historically would be what reflects on the performer as an athlete. And if they fail or make a mistake, so be it.
Dan Rather never got on the news like: "Tonight at 11, yall GOTTA see the badonkadonk on that one black chick on the olympic team!" And then Connie Chung zeroing in on the crotch of her leotard and announcing to the viewers at home she thinks she can see the outline of some lips.
Media aside, even most ordinary people wouldnt have those conversations in the past because nobody's gonna talk that way at the family dinner table or the office water cooler. But online we all do.
People put public figures on blast for shit that's way more personal now, and they do it in front of the entire internet community. That's what is causing so many people problems. Not the pressure to meet some athletic expectation. It's being a public whipping boy/girl for shit that doesnt even have to do with sports.
Nobody was clowning MJ's dead father in the 90s. Today we do it with thousands of people at a time, sitting back in a chair with our feet up while we eat haagen dazs. Joking about a stranger's personal tragedy and trauma as a way to pass time.
It's gotta be weird knowing the whole world is just collectively dissecting and abusing you online, even if you're not personally seeing them do it. You know everyone who knows you is seeing it constantly. And every time you meet someone new, you can only imagine what theyve already heard said about you.

A lot of athletes went through what she went through. I had a conversation with a massage therapist who was serving in the 80s and 90s olympics. He said so many world class athletes had severe insomnia, vomiting, fever and uncontrollable shaking day before their event. He had to massage them all night while playing psychiatrist with the coaches and sometimes family to calm them down. The pressure of international tournament is no joke.
They didn't quit though, didn't have that option.

Yup, altho I still say what you’re referring to is about competitive nerves, and that isnt specifically what is troubling a lot of today’s athletes.
What troubles today’s athletes is the whole world laughing in unison at them, over rumors their momma slept with a teammate. Or how their body looks in a tight uniform. Or their speech impediment at a press conference. The magnification of these things is a hundred times greater on social media than in traditional media. Thats the rub.
That said, I do think at the same time social media does embolden young athletes to quit or walk away, knowing a parent or coach isnt gonna beat the hell out of them in today’s day and age, given the public nature of everything. Back then adults would **** them up in a second once the cameras were off if they dared to abruptly quit on a commitment. Not anymore. So it is a double edged sword.

Looking more through the psychology, tbh if I'm Simone Biles, I'd feel like I'd earned the right to quit. How many medals have I contributed. Motherfker I'm the greatest olympic athlete of all time. I'd feel like everyone should still celebrate me even if I quit 3 more times cause that's just how great I had been. It'll be like if I'm Bill Russell and I'd won you 11 titles and then quit for one game.

But I still think if you compare eras, there is IMO no question a difference in the mental toll the spotlight takes. A lot of this is still pretty new and over time people will probably find better ways to adapt. But for teenagers and young adults thrust into the global spotlight in the social media age... I can see how it would be a mindfvck. And why most of them cant navigate it as successfully as LeGraceful.

Yeah, thats a general classification. The Visigoths were noble warriors with interesting magical mythology and strong women who ruled side-by-side with the men of the tribe. The Visigoths would bring their family to watch them fight in wars.
There were other Germanic tribes too. But it was mostly the Goths that brought down the western Roman empire.

But the gymnasts in the 80s, 90s, or whatever didn't have thousands of people DMing them on how they're a loser if the don't stick a vault land perfectly. So it's not really fair to compare across generations.
The only thing ppl will remember her for is being a mentally weak loser that quit.

People no doubt gon' get ruthless and call her mentally weak but she has enough of the hardware to just say fukk it tbh. She's already "old" in gymnastics terms, wonder why she still participated in the run up to these olympics, if she wasn't feeling up to it, should've just retired and saved herself from the shitstorm about to engulf her now.
Media gonna simp for her unfortunately.

I can't speak for how much pressure she must be feeling but I have to say, to be trained and coached for years just for this very moment and quitting? That's definitely a let down for a lot of people...

Being a victim and having people feel sorry for you is more righteous than winning a Gold medal to these athletes nowadays.

The haters are the obvious answer. What about the support system that reassures these athletes nothing is ever their fault? Some of these modern athletes are living in a distorted reality that can't reconcile failure.

No doubt. She can walk away one of the GOATs and never look back. She shouldn't have wasted everyone's time and resources but if anyone was allowed to, it's her.
She lost the fire in her belly. All the outside influences were too much for her little brain to deal with. You'd figure with her brother just recently aquitted for a murder he probably did, she'd be ecstatic. But oh well.
From a financial and retirement standpoint this is a disaster for her. No one is going to be endorsed by a quitter. McKayla Maroney is still doing commercials to this day because of her Olympic success and she's obviously nowhere near as accomplished as Biles. Simon Biles could have endorsement contracts thrown at her for a decade or more but that will probably be a trickle of what it could have been after this.
But if she truly wants to get away from this and the money, fame, and glory aren't important anymore, more power to her

Simone is quitting all-around individual final too.
I actually have a little more respect for her because of this. Sucks for the US because of the medal count but at least no one can now say she quit on her team and was only concerned about herself and individual accolades

Normal social interaction is necessary to keep a healthy psyche. But it's being replaced by virtual socialization aka social media. People are also living alone more than ever. Going out of the house less than ever. Terrible for mental health.

It's an interesting point though. She does this and is getting a lot of sympathy. Do you think if Lebron or Steph quit game 3 of an NBA final series and stated they would come back when they're ok (and didn't return) that they would get much sympathy? Outside of some shows that would act like they care, they'd get destroyed right after.

The biggest problem of which, IMO, is young people CONSTANTLY seeing themselves on camera. Selfie/instagram culture is enormously demoralizing, yet people cant seem to give it up because it’s what all the people in the herd are doing.
Looking at yourself on camera that often is toxic af. Most people hate the way they look in pictures yet theyre being compelled to share pictures of themselves every 5 minutes. This is such a failing on the parts of adults/parents. As soon as smart phones and social media began proliferating I could see all the average pleb parents just letting their kids go wild with it bc they were too incompetent to know any better, and here we are. Funny thing is they say its the executives of telecom and social media companies whose kids use these things the least. But dumb people make dumb parents and most of the world is DUMB.
Social media is a retarding shit hole, and it’s the primary backdrop of most children’s youth these days. And nobody can stop it because, again, that would be the parents job and most parents are generic follower beta morons.

your upset a world class athlete is quitting on a failed state in the making that is plagued by corruption at all levels? i haven't read up much on why she quit, but if we're going to compare athletes from previous decades, maybe also take into consideration america wasn't a laughing stock back then. it was a country you could be proud of and wanted to represent. now it's full of retards from both sides of the aisle shouting at each other while the wealthy and elite parties bring this country to its ruin. hardly anything to be proud of and draw inspiration from. good for her. seems like she decided this country wasn't more important than her mental health...and it isn't. :applause:

Clay Travis is a loser and labeling Biles mentally weak is dumb. Your post is just an emotional response to that. Neither one is helpful. One of the first things addicts say is that no one else's opinion is valid unless they've suffered their level of addiction. It's prohibitive to treatment.

She's gorgeous, but **** that, you don't quit on your team.
that is correct... Didn't see Doc's thread here , made my own. You are correct , Biles should never of tried to OVER achieve and just win for the team.
My question in my thread was why did she even get a metal ???
If you quite , we are rewarding quitters
