Luke Walton, Lakers forward, 2003-2012:
“Training camp back then, the vets didn’t have to be there until four or five days later. So the first couple of days it was just us young guys and Phil. Then the vets showed up and we had a team dinner. It’s Shaq and Karl and Kobe and GP and they tell me as a group, because of my father, they had a bidding war on the flight over to decide whose rookie I was going to be—to pretty much make my life hell. Karl paid like $15,000 to make me his personal rookie for the year.
We would get to cities like Milwaukee — I remember Milwaukee specifically because it was snowing outside—and Karl was like, "I need a pair of these certain type of headphones." So I called all around and nobody had them and I was like, "Karl, all I could find were these $20 headphones in the store across the street." He’s like, "Well, if you think I’m a $20 player, if you think that’s all I’m worth, go get those." I was like, "No, seriously, Karl, if I get you these ones…" And he’s like, "No, do what you want, you make the call." So I had to take this 30-minute taxi ride to some suburb in the snow to get him these nice $100 pair of headphones and the next day we’re getting off the plane and I see them just sitting in his chair. He’s already off the plane. ... So he sent me to get more headphones.”

Malone was 40 and retired after the season.Payton was 35, not even close to his prime.

Shaq might be Top 10 remotely but K-12 never was

Not that I believe that either of them are top 10 to begin with, but Kobe and Shaq were already 3 time champions. And then proceeded to win more chips without stacked teams.

Correct. And they were the ones who went to the lakers too, not the other way around.

But it didn't stop the '04 lakers from being heavy favorites over the underdog pistons.

Almost identical betting odds to Cavs vs. Magic '09 ECF (Magic were +550 compared to Pistons' +500).

Excellent story share I love it when the players cut loose and share some of the real stuff behind the wall of cameras and fans

Great quote. Doesn't surprise me one bit knowing what a piece of shit Karl was. Wish the Lakers never signed him as he only made the team chemistry worse.

Karl has some bad stories out on him I remember the statutory rape charges which is not a good look for a 6'10 black guy that gets a thirteen year old pregnant. I dont think Karl was a proper fit with Los Angeles either he fell off a hard cliff when he came to L.A. as the saying goes Father Time is undefeated because his scoring per game disappeared from 20 to 13 and even down to 11.5 in the PO but at least it was his last year he was super old and retired after the L.A. run. I wonder who would have been a stronger pick up back in 2004

He did get injured in the Finals so it skews his averages. He was still a good player in the RS but not an ideal fit like Horry was. He wasn't going to get the post-ups & average 20 with Shaq & Kobe on the team. Best case scenario would have been to re-sign Horry & get Pippen, who ultimately signed with a lottery Bulls' team instead. Lakers almost traded for him in '99 as well but declined the deal at the end.

no you're the idiot for comparing old washed up guys ring chasing for pennies on the dollar with no prior conversation with kobe bryant ( possibly shaq? i dunno..)

to

lebron tampering through clutch sports to force a trade demand out of prime anthony davis to the lakers

lebron hosting a collusion party with prime anthony davis and prime russell westbrook at his home to force another trade

and lebron calling up prime derozan telling him he will take a pay cut if he signs with the lakers

That matchup has nothing to do with what happened to them lol.

I remember a healthy Malone being a very good contributor on that Lakers team, his defense on Duncan in the playoffs that year was very impressive, Payton on the other hand was ass. Malone may have been past his prime, but I'll take '04 Malone over any Lakers starting PF from 2000-2002.

oh i'm sorry. i didn't know payton and malone were on 2 million dollars worth of steroids each year making them put their heads over the rim and keeping them on pace with the fastest end to end speed players in the game. i also didn't know either guy was still being argued as leagues best player
