View Full Version : Why was Alperen Şengün not a top 5 or top 10 pick?

This guy at 18 yrs old was top 3 in the Turkish league in PPG, RPG, BPG, FG%, TS%. He was also named MVP.

The Turkish league is top tier basketball league in Europe, maybe only topped by the Spanish league. The Euroleague winner is from Turkey.

What the actual ***? :biggums:

Watching his highlights when he played for Turkey, and even in his first summer league game with the Rockets, you can see that this guy has the fundamentals to be a pretty solid player in the NBA one day. He's only 19 years old and has several years for growth. Once he starts to develop more and gets a good feel for the game, I think he'll have a bright future in this league.

Great footwork and good passing but not a great defender(at least right now) and his shooting needs to improve. You don't look at accolades while drafting, you look at their skills.

After some disappointments in the 2000s (Tsikisvihli, Milicic, Pdlozkine), in the last years European players often get overlooked in the draft (Antetokounmpo, Jokic, Vucevic, etc.). If he has got the fundamentals and the skills you guys are saying he will be a good player in the league and a great asset for the Rockets.

A big man can go a really long way off of soft hands and good feet.

15 and 10 in 25mpg right now, ~62 TS%

Who knows if he ever becomes a good defender, but he is just too skilled, strong, and active for most bigs to handle already.

Im so nba'd out

He didn’t speak a lick of English and needs a translator to communicate with teammates. Well he did for his entire rookie year. Idk about now but he probably still doesn’t speak English. How the fk can u call out stuff on the floor if u don’t speak the language?

Surprised he wasn’t drafted lower. If he spoke English, he’d been a top 5 pick like porzingis was. Didn’t bother to learn so his stock fell. Only yao could get away with knowing no English cause he was a once in a generation prospect for his height. He had upside of being the best player in the world. Senguin doesn’t even if he hits the tippy top of his ceiling

He'll know enough basketball English soon enough surely.

Don't need language to crash the boards.

I'm sticking to my public prediction that he's Kevin Love with an edge. I think he's going to end up making at least 1 all star game.

Enes Kanter was a bigger prospect and he ended up being a bust. He's not a bad player but I don't see an allstar.

He will have to improve his shot.

He is averaging 15.4 on .566 and 10.0 rebounds in 25.4 minutes so far this season. And he's still half a year younger than Jokic was when he played his first game in the NBA.
He is better than Euros Jokic and Giannis when they were the same age, but not as good as Luka. So it seems like he's on his way to have one hell of a career.

Kanter was averaging 3ppg in Europe. Alperen was MVP of his league. Do you mean Kanter is physically bigger?

He's had a solid start so far this season. Too bad the Rockets' dumbass coach only plays him 25 mpg

Realistic goals for him this season would be 80% from ft and 35% 3point shooting while taking 2-3 a game. He was extremely entertaining to watch last season and he is a highlight machine. I like this Rockets roster overall tbh. Theu have A LOT OF talent. They started terribly but they can be really really good.

Kanter was the most dominant player in his age group dominating u18 tournaments. He could've been playing for big Euro clubs at the age of 16.

Instead he declined pro contracts and decided to leave for Kentucky at an early age. Eventually played no minutes and still got drafted #3 just off his rep.

Not saying Kanter is better than him in any way just comparing the hype between them because Sengun obviously is much smoother player.
