View Full Version : Which team would win if dribbling wasn't allowed?

The original rule of basketball didn't allow dribbling, except 2 gather steps.

Netball, which is a popular woman's sport in Australia, is actually what basketball was invented. It does have some other rules, like zones, with only one "attacker".

Let's forget that though and just say that the rules were:

No dribbling except 2 gather steps when receiving the ball allowed

Which teams would win?

Who would be GOAT?

It's called "Net ball" https://youtu.be/aBuxsRnU50A

If defender's were allowed into all zones, nobody would ever score.

Steph Curry would easily be the GOAT in that case, and the team with the best ball movement would be champs.

Warriors were #1 in assists and hockey assists last year while not even making the playoffs. They would rout the entire league. Imagine what their dynasty version would do.

MJs Bulls would still be dominant because MJ could score off ball, and the 80s Celtics would be >>> 80s Lakers because Magic can't play without big dribbling.

2014 Spurs also might be the GOAT team under these conditions.

Im not following the logic. The Warriors already led the league in assists, but they didnt make the playoffs... so why do they succeed in this scenario??

Dribbling/penetration is a great mechanism for ball movement and open shots. Without it, creating open defenders is much more difficult. Guys basically have to post up to catch passes, using their length and center of gravity to shield and grab the pass like a wide receiver. Dribbling is the kind of “skill” (as we discussed recently) that evens the playing field for smaller guys. It also creates open perimeter shots. Threes wouldnt be nearly as effective when theres always a hand in the face.

I think the best team would either have a classically dominant big man (Sixers for instance), or a lot of big athletic wings (Clippers). Or, most likely of all, the team that has LeResourceful (Lakers)

The logic is they aren't even a playoff team with #1 assist rank (best ball movement). That proves this is a dribble happy rule disobeying league.

Obviously in a league without dribbling the team with the best ball movement and passing will win.

What do players like Westbrook do without dribbling? Literally nothing.

Also... I know you Stan Lebron as a joke and I do find your jokes funny, but c'mon. Lebron would be nothing without spam dribbling. That's all he does. Spam dribble and iso mismatch.

Throwing it into a big man in the post requires the big man to dribble. Even Shaq used to dribble to set his slams up.

How offenses would look in this scenario is the in bounder would throw it to a guy in the back court, the catcher would relay it to a middleman at mid court, and the mid court catcher would throw it to a shooter presumably coming off a screen. It would be an off ball battle. Big men who could effectively seal and catch to dunk with no dribble would be effective but that would be hard to find. They all used to dribble. Stars like Curry and Klay all take tons of shots with no dribble. That's rare....

And in a league where's there's no dribbles scoring would be so low. Games would end in the 30s and 40s. So 3s would swing momentum even more wildly and be more valuable.

The game would look a lot like inbound plays.

A bunch of set plays and sophisticated screens.

I could see some big men being efficient, Kareem, Sabonis, Rik Smits, etc. Those who could shoot and pass.

If you put every championship team ever in a netball tournament

I believe it will be the 2014 Spurs vs 2017 Warriors In the finals

Klay, Curry,KD arguably 3 of the top 5 best off ball scorers ever

2014 Spurs have the GOAT teamwork in terms of ball movement/minimal dribbling

Amazing thread topic, including the net-ball references.

So which offense doesn't have a point guard role?.. It's the triangle

it was an offense that found little success on the NBA level (aside from tenures with MJ/Kobe), but if dribbles weren't allowed at all, it would thrive with anyone.

However, Curry and his 3ball would probably find the most success because of the extra point allowed.. But if we're playing net-ball rules, then there's no 3-point line, so now were back to the triangle winning the most

Yes the triangle or the Princeton offense.

I could see the Princeton offense working well with Boston of the 80s:

Ball movement in this game with be a secondary concern to player movement. Without someone open to throw the ball to there would be an extraordinary amount of turnovers or contested shots.

It’s really hard to say who would excel under these rules because there are so few guys who move well off the ball. It’s just not how the game is played so guys grow up focusing on developing other skills.

My best guess would be the warriors because they have two guys who are elite moving off the ball and they can make outside shots.
