Because they took religion too seriously.

Not just Islam, but a form of extreme belief on ANY religion will bring you back to the stone ages. These books were written during the stone age, and were meant for the stone age.

Doesn't help that the Americans were funding and arming several of those Islamic terrorist groups in order to **** with the Soviets.
