I wouldn't totally dismiss the suspension angle but Suspending him wouldn't make sense to me. All that would do is draw attention to his gambling or whatever it was. I'd say his pops getting murdered is the legit reason why he left but who knows for sure.

Every NBA player gambles in some kind of way. Even Chuck admits he was also gambling that time. It's personal decision and NBA has nothing to do with it.

Most likely it would be his endorsements that would cancel him because of his Be Like Mike image, not NBA
