View Full Version : Better 2-point jumpshooter - MJ or Curry

Every stat that exists says that Jordan is vastly superior from a volume and efficiency standpoint - literally 5-10 times the volume at better efficiency - the goat 2-point jumpshooter.
Meanwhile, the eye test confirms the massive gap in 2-point jumpshooting skill because Curry cannot pull-up and elevate for jumpers off a hard-dribble (imperative for 2-point jumpshooters) and he lacks a turnaround or fadeaway with defender draped all over, or the hangtime double-pump off the glass, and other types of 2-point jumpers

You need that smooth stop on a dime athleticism that Kyrie, Beal, McCollum, Booker and Klay Thompson have to be a great midrange shooter. Curry lacks that so this is unfair comparison. It's same reason that bum Lebron is a horrible midrange shooter.

Of course it's MJ. He has a huge advantage in elevation. Curry is still an elite 2 point shooter...but why would he hunt those shots? He's after the most efficient looks. If he can shoot 50% on pull up 2's and 42% on pull up 3's, why hunt 2's?
Curry shot a bit over 30% of his shots from midrange in 2013-14 and shot ~49% on them. Pretty damn good...but he shot 42% on 3's and was unassisted on more than half of them. He was creating 60%+ TS efficiency shots off the dribble from 3. Why take 2's?

At some point taking 2s is just being stupid. I’m not sure when that point is but it’s below when you can take 13 threes and make 42% of them.
Im all for mastering the midrange if you don’t have that in your bag. Curry would be an idiot to drive in for contested shots for less points.
If he weren’t so unbelievably successful winning and numbers wise maybe a case could be made it isn’t optimal….but he is.
Real “If it ain’t broke….” situation. I’m not judging anyone’s ability to do something stupid. And when you can make threes at his rate that is exactly what pull-up 18 footers are. Just like when you can blow by anyone for a layup it’s stupid to take a bunch of threes so I don’t judge Jordan.
If you can abuse people for dunks and layups don’t shoot threes. If you can rain threes at a rate that makes 2s stupid….don’t take tough midrange shots.
Do what you do well. Especially if you do it better than anyone. Which is why I don’t judge either by the ability to do what the other does on a goat level.
Do you. Don’t do them.

Curry better shooter, period.
Why take 2s at 50% when you can take 3s at 40%?
I'd take the bald one since i like clutch performers in the playoffs.

Curry shoots 46% for his career from 10 feet to the 3 pt line. If Jordan had an advantage over Curry in efficiency from that range it was probably marginal.
His big advantage over Curry from midrange would be his ability to get his shot off whenever he wanted.
In the end it doesn't really matter much. Jordan did his best work taking it to the rim/getting to the foul line and Curry does his best work behind the 3 pt line.

You do realize that if Curry shot the same volume of 2 pointers as MJ he'd literally be attempting 30 shots a game and scoring 45+ ppg?
You can't say MJ has an advantage in volume. That's just a factor of the styles of play and the evolution of the game.
Having said this. MJ is obviously the GOAT mid-range shooter. Curry is obviously the GOAT 3 point shooter.

Curry can't average 30 on two's, let alone 45
Curry can't shoot that many 2's - he can't get the shots off if he's shooting that many 2's
Curry's weak contested jumpshooting ability is why he can't shoot 2's and play that game - he can't make 2-point jumpers with defenders draped all over while he fades away all crazy - he just can't - he doesn't have it like that
Lol youd take sasha vujacic over curry:roll:
Is that better than taking derrick rose over allen iverson?
