Look at the massive increases among the homeless California and New York and the massive decreases among homeless in Texas and especially Florida in just one single decade

https://www.usich.gov/tools-for-action/map/#fn

In the last 10 years

California went from 120k homeless to 160k
New York went from 65k homeless to 90k

Texas went from 35k to 27k
Florida went from 57k to a less than half 27k

It's not a liberal thing. Washington, Oregon and Illinois saw decreases.

It's not a weather thing. Climate change right? The rest of the US outside Florida, California and Arizona is getting hotter and more habitable. Plus New York is cold AF during the dead of winter.

So what gives? :confusedshrug:

There is no fvcking way that Oregons homeless population has decreased over the past 10 years.

10 years ago Portland was a pretty nice city, these days the city center looks like a fallout game... and in the worst areas the streets are full of literal zombies staggering around screaming unintelligible nonsense

Same is true for Washington state, Seattle has never been worse than it is right now.

Businesses are moving away from those states in droves due to tax issues, which means workers are flooding out as well.

If the two biggest "always blue" states lose electoral influence, basically every election will end up going red. It takes the divide out of divide and conquer. So perhaps the plan is to gradually get all the country's homeless to fill up NY and CA to keep their populations afloat :lol

Tbh I don't think it's a terrible solution. George Carlin once "joked" about moving all the country's homeless into their own states and letting them do as they please.

The only unfortunate thing about it IMO is giving up California, which is probably the most beautiful state geographically in the union. It's a shame it's basically being earmarked as a giant bum-haven. Maybe in time we can hope to eventually shift those people to Nebraska. But it'll be a gradual process that will require some political cover.

According to our government Oregon saw a 25% decrease in the last 10 years. From 19k to 14k. Maybe it's just a Portland thing. I was wrong, Washington State was pretty much flat.

According to a different government agency Oregon had the biggest decrease in homeless last year among all 50 states including Florida.

Interesting numbers. The homeless go wherever they can survive best so go figure. NY has many programs dedicated to helping people get off the street. Florida sucks for welfare in comparison to NY and Cali.

I have been a resident of Oregon for a long time and I have had family here for even longer... and in my personal experience, any news outlet or govt agency that claims that homelessness is decreasing here is being dishonest or retarded.

Its not just Portland with apocalyptic level homelessness - Eugene, Bend, Corvallis, Medford, the bigger coastal cities, etc... the homeless situation statewide is lightyears worse than it was 10 years ago.

Well, people looking for work.

Which, to your point, explains why homeless people would not.

Sounds just like here in Sacramento.

Its like something out of a post apocalyptic, dystopic film. Mentally ill people on every street corner screaming to themselves. Loads of encampments of tents & smashed up vehicles.

My kids are 12 & 14 & I've lost count of the number of times I've told them, almost apologetically "this used to be a nice city when you were born".

Sacramento used to be nice?

I thought before the homeless there were gangs(still are?) and before the gangs there were serial killers.

Before modern times, this movement of homeless groups was simply called nomadic migration.

I'm not gonna dispute those figures, but it really feels like based off of footage & stories I've seen and even my own experience, the homeless population has ballooned in a majority of the major cities. Maybe the overall state populations have gone down, but I'd be extremely surprised if the cities have had a decrease in homeless population over the last 10 years.

Agreed. It doesn't seem plausible that homelessness would be down in so many places compared to 10 years ago. I've been to a number of different cities outside of NY/CA the last couple years and it feels worse across the board now than it has in my lifetime.

That said, I suppose it could be more visible while still being less prominent. But feels hard to believe.

The homeless might be armed forces vets.

And think of all the vacant rooms in houses, hotels/motels, apartments etc.

If you're smart, you move out of big cities. Or you will find yourself among the homeless one day.
