View Full Version : How can a ring-chaser be GOAT?

Why would a player who ring chased and failed doing so be considered GOAT?
I'm scouring the consensus greatest players....
Bird
Duncan
Erving
Hakeem
Jordan
Kareem
Kobe
LeBron
Magic
Russell
Shaq
Wilt
There's only 2 players in this whole group that changed teams on their own (signed or requested trade) 2 or more times in their prime, and the other one doesn't sniff top 5 on ANY legitimate list.
Based on this list is loyalty and resiliency through failure not inherently a standard for greatness?

both lebron and kobe are flashy wing players overrated by the media due to their obsession to replace Michael Jordan and keep a do it all wing as the face the othe league. both guys have major flaws and need legendary teammates making up for those flaws in order to win. kobe with his horrible shot selection that need to be cleaned up by teammates and lebrons lack of assertion and decisiveness or heart to take high pressure do or die shots or dig his teams out of holes. kobe and lebron have both been extremely lazy on defense and seemingly always pick their spots to prove they can still do it. kobe and lebron both have irritating fans that think accumulative statistics can vault you higher all time ahead of guys that simply dominated more efficiently. no amount of high scoring games by kobe or triple doubles by lebron make up for their lack of size and strength inside on both ends of the floor. a great big man 2 way defensive anchor with go to post moves that demands a constant double team is far more of a weapon to have. when kobe can be held in check by prince and lebron can be held down by jj barea I tend to doubt that either guy could compete in a 1 on 1 with the likes of a hakeem olajuwon or giannis or shaq/wilt/Kareem and many others
its simply smoke and mirrors. the media lied to us. these are not the best the nba had to offer since jordan. neither man could take a team on their shoulders with an Odom type sidekick and won titles.
sorry I just don't believe in the hype anymore

Nobody actually considers those two to be GOAT. Well, except for a handful of brain dead losers, but we all know who they are.
Free agency not existing in its current for most of NBA history is a very difficult concept to grasp for some.
Imagine being loyal to an organization that would stab you in the back at the drop of a hat. Cuck shit.

never understood this reasoning for lebron to impose the player empowerment era of ring chasing and superteam creating
franchises only ever mistreat lesser players. they rarely ever mistreat a legend
cleveland never would have traded lebron and only would have ever given in to his every demand. they went out and got every guy they could to try and help him win. they put up banners that covered entire buildings and treated lebron like a god
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_NBA_players_who_have_spent_their_entire_ca reer_with_one_franchise
this list would have jordan, hakeem, wade and many others had they not stuck around too long
fact is lebron used a phoney narrative to make an excuse for ring chasing

Free agency didn't conveniently just start in 2003 when LeBron joined the NBA.
Even running the list of recent retired greats in the top 75 all-time (drafted 96 or later):
Dirk
Duncan
Garnett
Iverson
Kidd
Kobe
Nash
Wade
We still see the same trend with players staying with the one or two teams through their prime. Still just 1 outlier in Kidd that forced his way around, and that's partially a reason nobody considers him even a top 5 PG all time as a result.
Funny how the LeProphets want to rewrite the rules on greatness.

Imagine Jordan getting drafted by Cleveland. A franchise that hasn't reached a single NBA FINAL, let alone winning a championship, before the arrival of LeBron James.
He brought a team that had no business winning the East, to the NBA finals. He lost against a historical Spurs franchise. He did not chase rings. Miami wasn't winning shit for four years straight after their 2006 run. Cleveland, it was the same thing when he decided to go back there. Lakers were also irrelevant before joining them, he brought them back to relevancy and won a championship. He won a championship and FMVP with every single franchise he played for. THAT'S SOME GOAT SHIT. END THREAD/.

Lebron never ring chased ever.
4 finals mvp for 4 championships.
I consider Kobe's 3 first rings as ring chaser rings.
Thats how it works.

For same reason he went to Cleveland.
To take a 1st round exit / lottery team to championship.
Bron has always joined teams that performed poorly the year before and catapult them to championship contention.
He doesn't ring chase by joining 70 win teams or 55 win teams like Jordan and Durant.

Jordan ring chased by joining a 55 win 2nd round playoff team.
Could have joined a lottery team but ring chasing is easier.
When Jordan didn't ring chase, Wizards, it doesn't go well.

LeBron, Kareem, Wilt & Shaq all switched teams in their prime, so right off the bat OP's completely wrong :lol
Of the rest of the guys you listed, compare LeBron's original supporting cast in Cleveland to Duncan, Kobe, Bird, Magic & Russell's, see who played with top 10 players and multiple HOF's and who didn't, then try to chalk up the guys staying to "loyalty" :lol Even after they won titles, played with top 10 players ever while on the leagues marquee franchise, Magic & Kobe both demanded to be traded. The notion those two would EVER stay in Cleveland is fcking delusional

Nice try clown, he was under contract.
In September of 1988, Jordan and the Bulls agreed to a renegotiated eight-year, $25.7 million contract.

I said switch teams more than once in their prime. Reading is fundamental.
Kareem switched teams once. Wilt demanded 1 trade. The Warriors had financial problems and they chose to trade Wilt on their own or go bankrupt. Shaq and LeBron are the outliers I mentioned.
The others changed the trajectory of their drafting teams and BECAUSE of them they won titles. None of those guys won the title every single year either. The years they didn't win they didn't suddenly decide to jump ship to stack the deck and ring chase. They suck around through the adversity or maybe switched teams once.

So you make up a bunch of arbitrary criteria for GOAT and get blasted in this thread.

Notice how he couldn't bring himself to compare LeBron's Cleveland cast to the players I referenced :lol Or addressed the fact Magic & Kobe even after having the best possible situations to start their careers demanded trades anyway.

It's a simpleton concept to grasp, not my fault it's going over your head.
Jordan was under contract from the 1988-89 season to the 1995-96 season. 8 years as I quoted. He couldn't have joined another team. GOATs don't ring chase.

We already know that LeBron is willing to sabotage the series if he's on pace to not win FMVP as evidenced by 2011.
