He was inefficient mostly because he was a (barely) 6 foot player having to score over much larger defenders, in a tough defensive. As evidence of how rule changes can impact stats Iverson in 2001, his MVP year at 26, averaged 31 on 42%. Flash forward just 5 years, post 2004 perimeter rules changes, and a visibly slower 31 year old A.I playing mostly the same style averages 33 on 45%. If you put peak Iverson in 2005 he's dropping 35 on 45%.

Efficiency is all about getting quality looks and when you taking 25+ shots it's not that easy so a lot of his shots were prayers but when he got a good look he was efficient. If he was cherry picking his shots I'm sure he could've shot above 50%.

Iverson had the most success shooting mid range jumpers off ball.

I think people only remember his drives from the highlight reels, but mostly he shot midrange jumpers and when he did that coming off ball, he was successfull.

It was when he decided to go 1 on 1 and do everything alone that the efficiency dropped.
