Kind of a silly thing to focus on, but going off of that criteria, if I'm trying to score in the paint and I see this waiting for me in the paint:

Mahorn and Thurmond. A lot of strength there, and Mahorn regularly threw cheap shots. Some claim Thurmond blocked more shots than Hakeem did in his prime - they weren't tracking then so who knows?

Yeah we’ll never know for Thurmond. Still block stats are available for his last 4 seasons though.

Replies like this are funny. The fact he blocked a lot of shots wasn't even the point. Nate had unusually long arms while playing with a rugged in your face style. Wilt also claimed Thurmond had a higher standing reach than him, and that Nate played him as good or better than Russell did.
That's what, asshole.

Simmons deserves to be torn down. I don't think I'll ever think about him again and forget that play. I thought I was mad at Manu's foul on Dirk - I can't imagine Sixers fans. Although one was trying to be a hero and the other was a coward.

In terms of "intimidating", I would go with Shaq. He never led the league in blocks and rarely had gawdy block totals, his presence alone seemed to have just kept people out of the paint or away from the rim period.

He was always amongst the league leaders in blocks in his prime, what do you consider “gawdy”?

He's not a scrub dude. He's long as hell and he's a good rim protector. I just don't think players are all that intimidated by him like they were say shaq or ben wallace. Here's videos of gobert getting banged on.

Note one of those videos is called rare because shaq rarely got dunked on.
Ben wallace got banged on more than shaq but it's still nowhere near Gobert. This was all i could find for ben.

a lot of guys don't get dunked on because they don't want to get posterized. Gobert tries to stop everyone and usually does. Everyone isn't dunking on him that's for sure. Teams shoot less than 40% at the rim against him when they dare try

That wasn't the case for shaq and it wasn't the case for ben who both got dunked on alot less all while playing way more games. They're simply way more intimidating than gobert for obvious reasons. Again the topic is who's a more "intimidating" rim protector Not who's the best.
If we're talking best as far as rim protection gobert is up there with the best forsure although he's often a liability because teams expose him on the perimeter and pick and roll and he dosn't have enough impact offensively to overlook his defensive liability. This was an issue this year in the series against the clippers.

that wasn't the issue. Not having anyone help him defensively or get him the ball when he had a smaller defender on him or a coach that would make adjustments were the issues. In the olympics he scored on smaller guys guarded the rim and perimeter with help from his teammates

It was definitely an issue. Commentators were talking about throughout the series. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.sportskeeda.com/amp/basketball/is-rudy-gobert-overrated-here-s-numbers-say-utah-jazz-star
That said i agree it wasn't the only issue. Some of tbe things you brought up were a problem also. Here's an article speaking on the that as well as the problem with gobert. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.sbnation.com/platform/amp/nba/2021/6/19/22541147/rudy-gobert-jazz-vs-clippers-game-6-nba-playoffs-2021
This article to your point talks about how the jazz perimeter defenders struggled to stop the dribble penatration like most teams do these days because of the rules. This would put gobert in a pickle because he had to step up to help which would leave his man open 9n the perimeter. This is where bigs like bam, greek and green are more effective because unlike gobert they're fast enough to help and then recover if they ball gets kicked out to the open man. Gobert in this situation is to slow so he often dosn't attempt to recover or he'll go it tentatively in fear of getting blown by.
Again the biggest problem with having gobert on the floor is he can't defend the perimeter at all and he dosn't dominate enough offensively to overlook his liability defensively. This has been a problem with alot of bigs in this era where the rules and style of play favors gaurds. This is why more and more teams are getting smaller more agile players to play center. Guys like bam, greek, ad, and even Draymond green are all players that are examples of this. They're all basically pf but can play center when the opposing team goes small ball. Most of the teams will have a true centers also so they have the option defensively to be more versatile and adjust better depending on if teams go big or small.
