Through the first 41 games of the season Bogdanovic shot 41% from 3-point range, a great metric by anyone’s standards. But, Bogdanovic, who is known as a 3-point shooter, has elevated his interior game. He’s hitting 2-point field goals at a career-best clip of 54.3% this season while also rebounding a career-high 4.2 rebounds per game.

O’Neale is tasked, more than any other player in the league, with guarding the opposing team’s No. 1 option, which has to be tiring considering the wide range of skills that each player he defends has on any given night. That, paired with the fact that the Jazz’s perimeter defense is often broken due to inefficiencies surrounding O’Neale, means that he is asked to do probably too much.

What is concerning are the few instances when Whiteside looks disinterested, completely unengaged, and sometimes downright unwilling to play at the level that he shows on other nights.

At this moment, I think there are a couple little things that could help. One possible way to bring life to this team is giving Eric Paschall more playing time. Don’t get me wrong, Paschall has flaws and isn’t the answer to all of Utah’s problems. But Paschall brings energy, something the Jazz are lacking. He brings excitement to hustling on defense and doing the little things. Another idea is getting Joe Ingles heavily involved in the next few games with Donovan Mitchell out. Give Ingles more shots, more pick and rolls, and more opportunities to get into his groove again. Last season, Ingles played incredible. Can the Jazz find some more of that magic again?

But finally, I think the Jazz have to see what’s available in the trade market. There are a handful of reasonable targets that could help this team. Marcus Smart, Kenrich Williams, Josh Richardson and Justin Holliday are some of my favorite players that are within Utah’s price range. They aren’t game changing, but they all bring solid perimeter defense and effort.

So, with all things considered, where do the Jazz go from here? There have been reports of the Jazz wanting to be very active as the trade line approaches, having a “defensive-minded wing” at the top of their priority list. You watch the Jazz one game and you can see their most glaring weakness, which is perimeter defense. With Rudy Gobert missing a few games over this bad stretch, the Jazz defense was completely exposed. It’s pretty clear that the Jazz need to improve on the perimeter or they will struggle with the exact same things that knocked them out of the playoffs last season. But what’s the play? The Jazz lack the assets to really make a meaningful move, unless they are willing to get crazy, which most believe they are not.

In all likelihood, this would have to happen in a three-team trade. Though Bogdanovic missed the potential game-winner against the Warriors, he once again showed why he should be the team’s go-to option in last-second situations.


Of course, the only reason Bogdanovic had the ball late in the game was that Mitchell missed the game due to a concussion.


During his Jazz career, Bogdanovic has two buzzer-beating game-winners, both of which game in his first year on the roster. This season, on the other hand, Mitchell has gotten the majority of the late game opportunities and the team has struggled to get good looks.


Now, this is truly no fault of Mitchell’s. The guard is the Jazz’s best offensive player regardless of who he shares the floor with, but late in games when it’s obvious he’s going to take the final shot, his 6-foot-1 frame can be a hindrance.

Bogdanovic meanwhile has tremendous size for his position, and an ability to get shots off against any defender without having to alter his attack, as was clear against the Warriors.


“Bojan Bogdanovic is as clutch a player as there is in this league,” Quin Snyder said after the loss.


Rather than call a timeout when the Jazz secured the rebound with 10 seconds left to play, Snyder let Bogdanovic attack the Warriors in isolation and nearly scored the game-winner.


“I think our whole team is confident when Bojan has the ball in that situation. With his size, he’s able to get a clean look, even if it’s contested and that’s what he got.” Snyder concluded.

The Jazz don’t find themselves in so many close games that it has become a major storyline, but between Mitchell, Bogdanovic, and even Mike Conley all of whom have gotten the ball in late-game situations, Bogdanovic seems best suited to generate a good look.

Jordan Clarkson heated up in the fourth quarter and hit some shots that made the Suns unable to relax in the closing minutes, but he brought the heat a little too late.

I just don’t understand Hassan Whiteside, and it wouldn’t be the first time. It seems like he only wants to play if there’s a chance of winning. Maybe that’s it. Maybe I do understand. When the game started it looked like Whiteside had already decided that because the Jazz were playing without their starters and Ingles that they didn’t have a chance. To say that he wasn’t giving any effort in the first quarter would be the understatement of the season. I totally understand that Monday night was his first game back after being out with COVID-19 but he wouldn’t have been cleared to play if he wasn’t ready to play, and it wasn’t his conditioning that was the problem. Whiteside was lazy on screens, wasn’t giving effort on the boards, was giving up on plays and was generally just going through the motions. Then all of a sudden the Jazz (because of the effort of the other guys on the court) actually were competing with the Suns and got the lead and that seemed to wake Whiteside up. But it wasn’t consistent and it’s a really weird switch that he has. It’s so hard to even watch the other players on the court when there is one player that is so clearly not giving it as much as the rest of the guys. At this rate, Whiteside isn’t likely to garner nearly as much interest as was thought early on in the season, if any. If he continues to have swings where his effort is in question so much, it really wouldn’t surprise me if this was his last season in the league.

There's not really any doubt Donovan Mitchell, Rudy Gobert, Mike Conley, Bojan Bogdanovic, Royce O'Neale or Joe Ingles, who all missed Monday's game due to various ailments, are better basketball players than the ones Utah threw out there against the Suns; however, it's not a sure thing they would have been any more competitive.

It's obviously expected for players who are fighting for their NBA lives or for more opportunities to bring energy and effort — especially in the middle of a long season; however, Monday showed that Snyder may have more options deep on his bench. There are nights when some players simply don't have it. On those occasions, it might be better for the team to throw in Forrest, House or Butler.

The Jazz entered the season with the deepest backcourt in the NBA with Mitchell, Conley, Clarkson, and Ingles filling out the four-man rotation.

Against the Suns, the Jazz showed they may truly have seven players who could get minutes in a regular NBA rotation.

Whether the veteran guard is still on the Jazz roster come the end of February, or should the team choose to hold onto him for one more playoff run, it seems hard difficult to justify not taking a closer look at at least one of Forrest, Butler, or House as a long term piece in the team’s organization.

With one minute left in the game, with the Jazz down by two, Donovan Mitchell drove hard to the basket, and missed a layup. Mitchell thought he got fouled on the play, but play went on, and Mitchell immediately fouled up two. That foul led to two made free throws by Kris Middleton, putting the Bucks up four. Following those free throws, Holiday snuck up behind Mitchell and stole the ball, effectively ending the Jazz’s hopes of a comeback. Mitchell initiated most of the plays down the stretch, as he usually does, but perhaps Mike Conley — who had his best game in months and was doing a great job engineering the Jazz’s offense in the third quarter — should have had the ball in his hands more in the closing minutes.

There’s certainly going to be those who feel like after seeing Hernangomez and Alexander-Walker perform well for the Jazz, that they deserve more time in the regular rotation. The same goes for Eric Paschall, who did not get the same chance on Wednesday. I understand that there have been flashes here and there of what these players can do, but I feel like it’s necessary to say that expectations need to be tempered. These players, while great in their roles in these opportunities, will not be who the Jazz coaching staff relies on when the games really matter. As frustrating as that might be for a fan, it’s important to remember that experience and trust are what teams rely on in pressure situations and it’s what the Jazz will rely on. Not so much a low note here as much as it is a note to call for understanding what’s to come.

I think that we’re getting to the point that we might actually have to talk about playing Nickeil Alexander-Walker over Trent Forrest. I think that Forrest has been excellent for the Jazz when they have been in need and he stepped up when they didn’t have other options last season with both Donovan Mitchell and Mike Conley injured and then he has provided some much needed relief this season as a third ballhandler, but the Jazz have developed and turned to Forrest because they didn’t have many other options, if any. But now they have two guys waiting in the wings in Alexander-Walker and Jared Butler who could probably develop on the defensive end pretty quickly and they have reliable shots. Forrest not demanding any respect and having gravity on the offensive end is creating some real spacing problems for the Jazz. When he is in the game and against tough opponents, it starts to look really bad.



House will play. COTY likes who he likes. Don't expect him to play the guys that should play


Mitchell finished the night with 37 points but was also a huge part of the ball sticking. I think it’s possible to look at the fact that the Jazz did not have Bojan Bogdanovic and Danuel House Jr., and that they didn’t get much help from Jordan Clarkson or Rudy Gay or Eric Paschall, but it has to start with the guys that are initiating the offense like Mitchell and Mike Conley and those guys didn’t seem to be willing to do the work necessary to beat the Celtics.
