Worked for Shaq and Barkley.
The best version of Barkley was also the closest to being in shape. Shaq is a different animal even from those guys, the only guy that can be compared to him as a physical talent is Wilt. And even Shaq was at his best when he was in decent shape, would have had a longer prime if he had kept his weight down. Williamson can't be elite if his weight ends up limiting him as a defender and rebounder and is making it harder for him to stay healthy. He can't be in Shaq's weight class when he's a half-foot shorter.

However, he has already had four leg injuries, and has a short half-life - stick a fork in him, he’s done.

He’s bad built man. If you’re bad built you better get on a plan. Injury is no excuse. There are a lot of things you can do even with a foot injury. Starting what what you’re putting in your face.

I was always pretty skeptical of his sustainability. Basketball puts a ton of stress on your joints, especially when you play the game the way Zion does. I hope I’m wrong and if I am he’ll be an all time great.

But I think it’s infinitely more likely he’s constantly unavailable and his window of greatness passes quickly. I would be shocked if he was a meaningful NBA player ten years from now.

Busts dont average 27 ppg shooting 61% from the field which Zion did last year.

Pretty hard to do cardio with a foot injury. All you can do is swim but even that could aggravate a foot injury.

And that isn't gonna get better with age and mileage with his weight.

Charles tells us that he approached Moses Malone early in his pro career:

Charles: why am i not improving and getting the accolades?

Moses: you are fat and lazy

Charles: what do mean?

Moses: which of fat and lazy don't you understand?

So Charles started shedding weight immediately, and it worked for him.

[This is also possibly the longest conversation anyone ever claimed to have with Moses.]

There was definitely an internet in the 90s. And players did get overhyped. Larry was a little bit because of UNLV success. Grant Hill even more, although injuries had a lot to do with that. Harold Miner (baby Jordan) was probably the most overrated, as he was never actually a star and washed out of the league at only 24. Penny Hardaway was also a bit overhyped on the Magic. There was a commercial calling him the best player in the NBA when Jordan retired the first time. I'm sure Shaq didn't appreciate that.

Bennett in the sense of lack of motivation, not basketball skill. It might be the Pelicans situation and how the've handled things. I'm guessing Zion on the Knicks is more motivated.

A big part of Zions hype was from YouTube vids. YouTube didn't start until 2005.

Ralph Sampson in 83 had generational hype. He was going to revolutionize the game, being a mobile 7'4 with some guard skills (for the era). And Ewing was supposed to fill his fingers with rings. At least Ewing was a top 50 HOF player. Who knows with Sampson. Injuries derailed his career. Hopefully, Zion can stay healthy enough.

Are you seriously blaming him for the fact they can't make the playoffs? They have been dysfunctional for a long time. They missed the playoffs a bunch of times when AD was there.

Ownership there give no fs about basketball. They are only interested in the Saints and bought the team because nobody else would.

I'm not blaming Zion for anything other than not staying in better shape. It's not his fault people like you expect him to come into the league and lead the Pelicans to deep playoff runs right away. And yes, people did expect that.
